Join the Molokai Arts Center (MAC) and Molokai artist Perry Buchalter for the next Art Bar at Hiro’s ‘Ohana Grill – “Painting Beneath the Sea.”

Buchalter, who is loved for his creativity and his entertaining teaching style, will be directing you through this painting exercise.

“There is much documentation on how colors begin to disappear the farther they move away underwater. First the vibrant reds and oranges, then yellows, browns, followed by greens, blues, and violets. Come and take a journey as we explore how to paint a simple underwater scene, or more advanced based on your skill level. Remember that in art, there are no mistakes, only happy accidents and the only thing that truly matters is that your personal voice shows in your work. See you there. Stay creative,” said Buchalter.

Perry Scott Buchalter has been a resident of the islands since 1968, and on Molokai since 1979. The love and respect he has developed for nature here can be seen in his artwork. He earned his BA from University of Hawaii Hilo in 1995, and taught at Molokai High School for over 20 years. He occasionally lectured on art at the University of Hawaii Maui College Molokai Education Center. He paints a variety of media and enjoys surfing, hiking, playing the harmonica and guitar, and since retirement has had more time to spend with his family. He’s back with renewed energy to take a more active role at the MAC.

This next Art Bar will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 7, 5:30-7 p.m. Online registration is required. Enjoy the company of other creatives, novice to pro, while watching a beautiful sunset and treating yourself to a no-host bar and appetizers. Bring a friend, classmates, make it a girls night out, a bro bonding event, or have some art therapy with co-workers after a long day. Cost is $40 for non-members, $32 for current members.
