Two Shooters Charged with Attempted Murder
Two Molokai men were arrested and charged with first degree attempted murder for shooting two men in Ho`olehua last Wednesday, Oct. 14. Thirty-two-year-old Chad Kaipo Naehu of Kaunakakai and 26-year-old Travis Torres of Ho`olehua turned themselves in to the Molokai Police Station at about 10:15 p.m. that night, according to police. Both are being held on Maui on $1 million bails.
The two men they shot were hospitalized after each sustained a gunshot wound. A 52-year-old man was shot in the neck and was transported to Oahu in critical condition. The second victim, a 37-year-old man, was shot in the rear and also flown to Oahu, in guarded condition. The names of the victims have not been released as of Sunday.
Maui County police said they received a 911 call at 2:30 p.m. and discovered the two men had been shot near a home on Pu`ukapele Ave. in Ho`olehua.
Some Molokai residents believe the shootings to be drug-related but police have not confirmed this. The investigation is ongoing, and Molokai police ask anyone with information to call 553-5355 or 244-6400.
In the aftermath of such a violent and shocking incident on Molokai, the legal proceedings now hinge on the ability of the accused to navigate the bail system. Chad Kaipo Naehu and Travis Torres, both arrested on charges of first-degree attempted murder, are facing steep bail amounts of $1 million each. For many individuals in similar situations, the ability to post bail is crucial, as it offers the opportunity to prepare for trial outside of jail, maintain employment, and stay connected with family.
In cases like this, services from reputable bail bond agencies, such as Mr. Nice Guy Bail Bonds, can make a significant difference, providing the necessary financial assistance to secure release during the pretrial phase. While the charges against Naehu and Torres are severe, having the chance to work with legal counsel and strategize defense efforts outside of jail could play a pivotal role in the outcome of the case.
In the broader context, the bail system’s impact on both the accused and the victims involved underscores the importance of a compassionate and effective approach to justice, one that offers both accountability and the opportunity for due process.
