Transforming Trash to Art

Malama Maui Nui News Release

The Art of Trash is an annual juried exhibition that includes an art gallery and a Trashion Show, which inspires people to reimagine our resources, such as previously used materials, as elements for creative inspiration. Hosted by Malama Maui Nui and sponsored by the County of Maui’s Environmental Protection and Sustainability Division, the Art of Trash 2021 Virtual Exhibition will be live in April at MalamaMauiNui.org/ArtOfTrash.

Submissions from Molokai, Maui and Lanai will be accepted virtually from Feb. 1 to March 1. To submit an art piece for the Art Gallery and/or a fashion piece for the Trashion Show, visit MalamaMauiNui.org/ArtOfTrash and follow the provided instructions. Participants can submit multiple pieces for both the Art Gallery and the Trashion Show. The registration fee is $15 per piece and proceeds will benefit Malama Maui Nui.

All Art Gallery and Trashion Show entries must be original work made from recycled and/or reused material. Natural items such as drift wood, shells, food, etc. are discouraged. The Juror will be looking for the transformation of material, good craftsmanship and, of course, overall creativity. If your piece gets selected, it will be featured in The Art of Trash Virtual Exhibition 2021 in April.

Thanks to the EACH Foundation’s Trashion Show sponsorship, juror-selected Trashion Show pieces will be professionally filmed while designers “walk the runway” in their designs! The resulting video will be showcased in the Virtual Exhibition. Impressive prizes will be awarded to winners of the Juror’s Choice Awards and Community Choice Awards!

Malama Maui Nui is a nonprofit organization that empowers residents to work together to keep Maui Nui clean, safe and healthy.
