“Today My Life Begins”
MHS’ class of 2012 graduates
“Your life is made up of the sum total of the choices that you make,” said Molokai High School (MHS) commencement guest speaker Randy Manley. “Choose wisely.”
That was the message MHS graduates were left with last Saturday at their commencement ceremony. Dressed in Farmer green gowns, the 87 members of the class of 2012 stood in front of friends, faculty and families who have supported them.
In a teary address, senior class president Leenell Hernandez shared one of her favorite quotes with departing classmates. “The road of life twists and turns and no two directions are ever the same, yet our lessons come from the journey, not the destination.”
Principal Stan Hao urged the class of 2012 to “conceive, believe and achieve,” even after they leave MHS. “Anything you will ever do in life starts with an idea,” said Hao. “You are the hope for a brighter tomorrow for all of us.”
The Barn quieted when the graduates rose in gospel choir fashion to perform their rendition of Bruno Mars’ song, “Today My Life Begins.” The chorus, “a whole new world is waiting/it’s mine for the taking/ I know I can make it/ today my life begins,” captured the sentiments of the new graduates as they explore new possibilities.
Diplomas were handed out one by one to roaring cheers and blaring air horns. Outside, proud parents shared hugs and kisses and lei stacked nose-high around the necks of the new graduates.
