The Art Show Goes On

MAC News Release

The ninth annual Molokai Arts Center (MAC) Member Show will be exhibited online at the Molokai Arts Center website beginning Nov. 9. The online gallery will be up for two months. Some of the works are offered for sale (NFS=Not for Sale).

This year’s juror was Maya Lea Portner. Maya is an artist and educator in Honolulu, Hawaii. She earned a BFA (Sculpture) from Washington University School of Art in St. Louis and an MFA in Art (Fibers) at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Maya has exhibited nationally in New York City, San Francisco and St. Louis, MO. Most recently she participated in the Open Studio Residency 2018 at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Maine. Portner is the 13th recipient of the prestigious Catherine E. B. Cox Award for Excellence in the Visual Arts, awarded biannually by the Honolulu Museum of Art.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the entrants’ works were juried digitally as well as via “blind jury” in which the identities of the artists were not known by the juror. Maya was tasked with selecting the awardees for this annual exhibition. The $100 Best of 2D Award was presented to Kanoelani Dudoit for her three pieces: “Ku Kiai Mauna,” “Beyond the Border” and “Another Journey.” While the pieces were submitted separately, the juror felt her surface design on all three pieces were worthy of awards.

Arabella Ark received the $100 Best of 3D Award for her ceramic piece entitled, “Upena Vase.” Maya selected Vashti Lima’s acrylic painting “Sunset in Kaunakakai Town” as the Best of Kupuna ($100). Nina Evans received the distinction of Best of Show ($350) for her acrylic painting, “Lilikoi.”

Congratulations to the winners-they are most certainly well deserved! Kudos also to members whose art pieces were juried into this year’s show.

You can view all of the juried works in the Molokai Arts Center ninth annual Member Show at molokaiartscenter.org. A Keiki Member Show art gallery will be available for viewing in a photo album on the Molokai Arts Center Facebook page. It’s also a great time to become a MAC member and start working on your submissions for next year’s show. Membership information can also be found on the MAC website.
