After suffering early season losses, both the boys’ and girls’ tennis teams are starting to bring in victories. Last weekend at home against the St. Anthony Trojans, the girls got their first win of the season, while the boys won twice against the Trojans.

“We always get better as the season goes on,” said Head Coach Dean Chow. “… At the end of the season we like to challenge the first place teams because we think we’ll be right there with them.”

On both Friday and Saturday, Molokai’s boys beat St. Anthony 4-1. Molokai’s girls lost 4-1 on Friday but won 3-2 the next day.

“It was tough. He had a lot of good lobs and he got the shots that I thought that he couldn’t get,” said Bicoy, who shook off a second-set loss to beat Colin Mendoza-McGee.  “…I told myself to play like the first set and just to calm down and start playing smart.”

Molokai’s doubles teams were the source of multiple Farmer wins throughout the weekend. The boys won all four doubles matches, including two sweeps from No. 1 doubles partners Kaiea Dowling and Preston Pascua. The girls won both doubles matches and a No. 2 singles match in their first team victory on Saturday.

The Molokai boys’ are now 3-3, while the girls are 1-5. Both will compete off island this weekend against Maui Prep and Maui High.
