The Molokai Lady Farmer Softball team completed an undefeated season and won the Division II Maui Interscholastic League Championship last weekend on Maui by beating Lanai 13-6 on Saturday at Patsy Mink Field in Kahului. It was Molokai’s first league championship since 2014. The Lady Farmers advanced to the championship game by beating Hana in the semifinals 13-3 in six innings on Friday. Molokai, and Lanai as runner up, will now travel to State Championships at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium and McKinley High School May 3-6.

Head Coach Kawehi Horner said his team started off slow on Friday, after flying in the rain to Maui in the morning, but they took care of business.

“Our girls had a rough start, and I couldn’t help but appreciate the challenge at hand,” he said. “We coaches know the capabilities of these girls so letting them independently identify the problem and to make the fix worried me a little but our Farmer ladies were able to regroup themselves in the fifth inning and end on a strong note.”

On Saturday, Molokai (8-0) got the win over the Pine Lasses (5-3) and Horner knew his team was ready.

“I am happy that our ladies met their goal in bringing home that W!” he said. “I am proud of the fact that they have strong wills and good work ethics to tolerate our heavy practices as they know success meets us half way.”

Senior Brooke Keliihoomalu is ready to continue this amazing season.

“We’re happy and excited with how far we’ve come yet we’re not ready to settle,” she said. “We have about a week and a half to prepare for states and I can’t wait to see what we can do as a team. All Glory to God!”

Nadia Augustiro, also a senior, echoed her teammate.

“It feels great to have gained back the title after three years!” she said. “However, we couldn’t have done it without the hard work and dedication of the whole team! Im so proud of how hard everyone has worked and how far we came this season and can’t wait to see what states has in store for us!”
