Seeking Next Editor of The Molokai Dispatch

The Molokai Dispatch is a weekly, locally-owned newspaper that’s been in print for 40 years. We’re seeking a new editor to lead community-centered journalism and guide the paper’s content. This person would ideally already be a Molokai resident, with a commitment to amplifying local voices, fostering the island’s cultural legacy, upholding the highest standards of journalism, and ability to separate personal viewpoints from the professional responsibilities to provide inclusive and trustworthy news coverage of Molokai’s issues and events. We’re looking for someone with a love for Molokai and passion for storytelling and community journalism.

Responsibilities: 

  • Full-time, in-person position that requires a flexible schedule to attend evening events and work on weekends 
  • Work hands-on with community contributors of all ages and abilities to prepare their writing for print and provide mentorship when needed
  • Management of weekly print editions and online content, day-to-day editing, and big-picture content planning 
  • Coordinate with graphic designer on weekly layout
  • Serve as the paper’s primary reporter
  • Build relationships with Molokai residents and leaders, engage with community and stay attuned to local events and issues
  • Lead community-centered initiatives that strengthen the bond between the paper and its readers

Qualifications:

  • Must have excellent communication and leadership skills, with strong writing and editing experience preferred
  • Must be experienced and comfortable working in a deadline-oriented environment 
  • Ability to write about Native Hawaiian cultural issues and history with sensitivity and respect
  • Molokai roots and residency preferred; Hawaii residency and relocation to Molokai is a must 
  • College degree in journalism, communications, English or related field preferred, or equivalent experience
  • Must be able to separate personal views from professional responsibilities
  • Nonprofit experience preferred 

 

Starting salary $35,000-$45,000, based on qualifications, with increase following nonprofit transition. 

This position will answer to The Molokai Dispatch Board of Directors.
