Hotel and B&B Proposed for Town

12 Molokai Businesses at County Product Show

At this year’s second annual Made in Maui County Festival, we have 12 booths occupied by Molokai businesses. The Kuha`o Business Center (KBC) is excited to not only have businesses returning to the festival from last year, but to be adding to the list of Molokai businesses that will be represented. The festival takes place Nov. 6-7 at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center in Kahului.

The event will boast a larger format with more products, more vendors, more food trucks, and more reasons to buy local. Nearly 140 product vendors and food trucks are confirmed for this year.…

Molokai Metric 100K Ride

Kualapu`u School hosted Molokai’s first-ever 100K bike ride on Jan. 18.  Twenty-four riders completed either the half- or full-length distance course that extended from Hotel Molokai to Morris Point and back, then looped around Kualapu`u and Airport Loop, to finish back at the Hotel.  Two on-island bike riders participated, Will Carlson and Lydia Trinidad; one former Molokai resident returned for the ride, Amanda Han; and the rest of the bicyclists came from off-island.

The first two riders to complete the noncompetitive course were Jeffrey Ling and Bill Leach in just under three hours 10 minutes. The largest bicycling support group to participate was the Red Hot Ladies Cycling group, a Hawaii Bicycling League affiliate, led by Patricia Johnson, also of Oahu. …

Excellence in Spelling

Throughout the month of November, students at Kaunakakai Elementary School (KES) prepared to take part in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Each student grades two through six was given a Scripps National Spelling Bee Study Guide with 100 spelling words to practice for their classroom Spelling Bees. The top two winners from each second through sixth grade classroom then advanced to our School Spelling Bee Championship that was held Tuesday, Nov. 25 in our school cafeteria.

Molokai Vendors Take Maui Trade Show by Storm

The owners of 12 Molokai businesses came home from Maui earlier this month with new customers, sales leads, county-wide fans and a great experience. They attended the first-ever Made in Maui County Festival, an event that showcased locally made products from more than 130 vendors at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center.

The positive response to the festival astounded everyone.

Jennifer Hawkins, small business advocate at Molokai’s Kuha`o Business Center, said about 8,000 attendees were anticipated at the event. Yet despite pouring rain throughout the day, more than 9,000 people came. Molokai vendors occupied their own area at the show, marked by green flags, and Hawkins said officials were “in awe” of their presentations and the effort that was put into transporting and showcasing the products.…

Twelve businesses from Molokai have been selected to be among a 130 of Maui County’s top businesses at the 2014 Made in Maui County Festival. They are selling products certified as 51 percent or greater Made in Hawaii.

Soup-porting the Arts

Stomachs growled outside of the Molokai Community Health Center Saturday evening as a line started to form. Guests eagerly peered through windows to scope out the tables of ceramic bowls and pondered which soup to select.

The fourth annual Soup ‘R Bowl, held by the Molokai Arts Center (MAC), welcomed over 300 hungry guests for a night of fine art, food and entertainment, in support of the MAC and youth art programs.

Twelve of the MAC’s artists wheeled and hand built nearly 500 ceramic bowls in all shapes, sizes, colors and textures to fit the fancy of any taste, for any guest to take home with them.…

Bakery Pays $20,000 in DOH Settlement

After accruing $90,000 in fines to the state Department of Health in 2012 for sanitation violations, Kanemitsu Bakery has reached an agreement with the DOH to pay $20,000 instead.

DOH Communications Officer Janice Okubo said the settlement was reached outside Hawaii’s court system during hearings within the DOH that are scheduled when someone has an objection or concern about a penalty or notice of violation.

“I’m very satisfied,” said Kanemitsu Bakery owner George Kanemitsu of the resolution. “There’s no way we could have paid [the original $90,000 fine].”

Kanemitsu said the bakery’s operations are back on track after a six-month closure in 2012 following the violations.…

Molokai High boys basketball won the last game of their regular season over St. Anthony, as well as celebrated Farmer Homecoming last Friday. Closing the night at the Barn with a 44-40 score, the team also honored their two seniors, David Rapanot, and Likeke Schonely. The boys will play in the MIL championship this weekend.

In an effort to boost homecoming attendance and raise money for the cash-short Molokai athletics department, stakes were raised for one lucky game attendee to win $10,000 by making a half-court shot. Shirley Rawlins of Rawlins Chevron and David Mikami of Molokai Drugs donated the money, and tickets for the drawing sold for $5.…

Mateo’s Mana`o

 

Danny Mateo’s time as Maui County council chair ended at noon Jan. 2. The next minute he started his work in the Mayor’s office as an executive assistant and liaison for the county and State legislature.

“Retirement for me is not in the immediate future,” he said over coffee at Kanemitsu Bakery Saturday. “I still have a lot to offer. As long as there is fire in the fireplace I will continue what I do.”

This means Mateo will continue to be a voice for the people of Molokai and work to improve the island, something he did for 10 years as a councilmember before he reached his term limit.  …
