‘Boots on the Ground’ with Congressman Kahele

On a three-day visit to Molokai last week, Congressman Kai Kahele worked with Molokai veterans to solve healthcare challenges, discussed renewable energy projects and East End road infrastructure needs, discussed college campus expansion plans, tourism management, women’s resource programs and more. It was Kahele’s second island visit since being elected to represent Molokai and other areas of Hawaii’s second Congressional District in 2020. 

“One of the biggest things that we jumped right into and was very beneficial that we came was this transition for our veterans from Molokai General Hospital to something else that is still undetermined but we think is a new partnership between the Veterans Affairs and Na Pu’uwai,” said Kahele during a Dispatch interview last Wednesday.…

Soup-porting the Arts

Local ceramic artists created more than 400 pottery bowls for this year’s Molokai Arts Center annual Soup R Bowl event, held last Saturday at Lanikeha. Attendees picked their favorite bowl, filled it with soup of their choice and enjoyed the music of the Molokai Instrumental Music Education program led by Bob Underwood, and Malama Molokai Wellness with musicians Kala Bishaw-Juario and Kaleo Bishaw. 

The 12th annual event supports the Molokai Arts Center’s art education programs, including classes for keiki and kupuna. Guests were also able to meet the potters who made their bowls — Dan Bennett, Emillia Noordhoek, Kim Markham, Betty West and Maricel Kanemitsu.…

COVID has had its toll on the Molokai High School (MHS) students with missing out on so many fun activities. With the start of a new school year, MHS is proud to announce the new Molokai High School Executive Board. The students on this board are earnest to ensure that the high school is a safe learning environment.  They plan to bring some fun activities to make up for much of the student isolation of the last school year.  These chosen students want to make a difference for the 2021/22 school year and are keen to hear from the students’ voices and opinions on making the school a better place.  …

31 New Cases Last Week

Last week was a high case-count week for Molokai, with between one and six new COVID positives each day for a total of 31 new cases between Friday, Sept. 10 and Friday, Sept. 17. Friday, Sept. 10, the Dept. of Health reported five new cases for the island, Saturday had two, Sunday had five, Monday had three, Tuesday had four, Wednesday had one, Thursday had five and Friday closed the week with six new cases. The island is averaging four cases per day, according to DOH, with a total of 202 cases since the pandemic began, as of last Sunday. …

Mahalo for Soup ‘R Bowl Support

The Molokai Arts Center held its 11th annual Soup ‘R Bowl on March 6. Themed “Reimagined,” the fundraiser event featured 492 soup bowls and mugs created by Molokai artists. MAC reimagined the usual sunset under the banyan tree dinner fundraiser and created a COVID-compliant walk-through, take-out experience that was enjoyed by all.

Mahalo Molokai for supporting Molokai’s only nonprofit arts education program. A Legacy of Love’s

Love’s Bakery has held a special place in Hawaii’s history for nearly 170 years as the business closes at the end of this month. Love’s legacy on Molokai began in the mid-1900s and the bakery’s closure also brings the end of an era for its Molokai employees and customers.

Details are scarce on the early employees of Love’s on Molokai — Francis Yuen and Sadao Otsuka, who have both passed away — but most sources agree Love’s began distributing on Molokai in the 1950s. More recently, Dickie Linkee, George Kahinu and Mike Kahinu drove the Love’s trucks.…

Focused on Food: Residents adapt to new grocery routines

As Molokai residents struggle to settle into routines of a new normal amid stay at home orders, shopping for food has proven a challenging task for many on the island. With Friendly Market’s continued closure anticipated until April 20, and the other main stores limiting customers to placing orders for curbside pickup, lines for food have been hours long.

Many residents reported attempting to reach Misaki’s two phone order lines hundreds of times. Car lines for shopping at Kualapu’u Market often extended to Molokai High School. Both stores have limited the amount of items each customer can purchase.…

Kaunakakai School Stage

With a little luck, some good weather, and the help of volunteer community members, Kaunakakai School will have a new outdoor stage in time for its May Day celebration on May 11. The 800 square foot raised permanent stage area, constructed with concrete and sod, will serve as a platform for school and community events like May Day, promotion and other celebrations and activities.

School Principal Daniel Espaniola said the project has moved forward thanks to a generous donation of materials from the Kanemitsu family whose daughter, Aiko, is a sixth grader at the school.

“Last year, I asked my mom if we could have a permanent stage outside our school,” Aiko told Molokai Planning Commissioners last week.…
