A Legacy of Love’s

Love’s Bakery has held a special place in Hawaii’s history for nearly 170 years as the business closes at the end of this month. Love’s legacy on Molokai began in the mid-1900s and the bakery’s closure also brings the end of an era for its Molokai employees and customers.

Details are scarce on the early employees of Love’s on Molokai — Francis Yuen and Sadao Otsuka, who have both passed away — but most sources agree Love’s began distributing on Molokai in the 1950s. More recently, Dickie Linkee, George Kahinu and Mike Kahinu drove the Love’s trucks.…

Focused on Food: Residents adapt to new grocery routines

As Molokai residents struggle to settle into routines of a new normal amid stay at home orders, shopping for food has proven a challenging task for many on the island. With Friendly Market’s continued closure anticipated until April 20, and the other main stores limiting customers to placing orders for curbside pickup, lines for food have been hours long.

Many residents reported attempting to reach Misaki’s two phone order lines hundreds of times. Car lines for shopping at Kualapu’u Market often extended to Molokai High School. Both stores have limited the amount of items each customer can purchase.…

Hotel and B&B Proposed for Town

Two upcoming projects slated for permitting represent firsts of their kind on Molokai. A two-story hotel and commercial space planned for downtown Kaunakakai would offer eight rooms for rent and retail storefront. The island’s first potentially permitted Bed and Breakfast is also seeking approval from the Molokai Planning Commission this month.

Molokai Vendors Take Maui Trade Show by Storm

The owners of 12 Molokai businesses came home from Maui earlier this month with new customers, sales leads, county-wide fans and a great experience. They attended the first-ever Made in Maui County Festival, an event that showcased locally made products from more than 130 vendors at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center.

The positive response to the festival astounded everyone.

Jennifer Hawkins, small business advocate at Molokai’s Kuha`o Business Center, said about 8,000 attendees were anticipated at the event. Yet despite pouring rain throughout the day, more than 9,000 people came. Molokai vendors occupied their own area at the show, marked by green flags, and Hawkins said officials were “in awe” of their presentations and the effort that was put into transporting and showcasing the products.…

Molokai Businesses Represent

County of Maui News Release

Twelve businesses from Molokai have been selected to be among a 130 of Maui County’s top businesses at the 2014 Made in Maui County Festival. They are selling products certified as 51 percent or greater Made in Hawaii.

The 2014 event will be held Nov. 8 from 8:30 a.m. til 4:30 p.m. at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center.  Help the County of Maui – Office of Economic Development and Maui Chamber of Commerce, congratulate the following businesses.

Danny Mateo’s time as Maui County council chair ended at noon Jan. 2. The next minute he started his work in the Mayor’s office as an executive assistant and liaison for the county and State legislature.

“Retirement for me is not in the immediate future,” he said over coffee at Kanemitsu Bakery Saturday. “I still have a lot to offer. As long as there is fire in the fireplace I will continue what I do.”

This means Mateo will continue to be a voice for the people of Molokai and work to improve the island, something he did for 10 years as a councilmember before he reached his term limit.  …

Baking for the Masses

By 6 a.m. on most weekdays, Valerie Dudoit Temahaga already has her booth set up along Ala Malama Ave. in Kaunakakai and the smell of fresh-baked goods is wafting down the street for early-morning workers who come from as far as Molokai’s east end. Since the temporary closure of Kanemitsu Bakery’s operation earlier this year, many Molokai residents have turned to Temahaga’s pastries as a source for their baked goods.

“When the bakery closed, people asked me to bake and sell here,” said Temahaga, who started baking over 30 years ago. “I never expected it to get this big though. It was really exciting for us when people started buying from our back doors [at Lanikeha] like they did at hot bread lane.”…

Barn Party

Among the honors and recognitions given out that night were the 2009 winners of the Albert and Evan Inaba Scholarships. Receiving the $2000 Academic Scholarships were graduating seniors Colton Manley, Jerome Clemente, and Estrella Madani. Justes Davis and Leya-Justina Luafalemana were awarded the $500 Albert and Evan Inaba Vocational Scholarship.

MHS Principal Linda Puleloa and Vice Principal Earl Nakamura, both retiring on June 30 of this year, were among the staff and faculty honored.

The Reunion committee would like to thank following people and organizations for their contributions to the reunion meal: Patrick and Denise Kawano, Kevin Misaki of Misaki’s, Jeff Egusa of Friendly Market Center, Sonya Yuen of Kualapu`u Market and Blossom Poepoe of Kanemitsu Bakery.
