MHS’s cross country runners gain experience at MIL meet

Seven of the 14 girls from Molokai High School’s (MHS) cross country team traveled to Hana for the season’s third Maui Interscholastic League (MIL) Meet on Saturday. Though none of the girls placed, the runners, who were all freshmen, got their first taste at competing in a cross country meet.

“I was proud of them because they gave it their best effort and that’s all I could ask for,” said Coach Eugene Santiago.

They started training five weeks ago, running for about three miles every practice at various locations like Ironwood Golf Course, the track at MHS, the fields at Coffees of Hawaii and along the highway.…

Little League Hits It BigMolokai All Stars advance to state championships

The 13 boys of the Little League Majors, ages 11 to 12, came off the Maui Ferry Thursday night celebrating as District 3 champions. Having defeated defending state champion Central East Maui at the district tournament at Kalama Park, the Molokai All-Stars knew they would be headed to the state tournament.

This is the first time Molokai has made it to the state level since 2006, and it wasn’t easy.

After suffering a 13-1 loss to Central East Maui on Wednesday and the district championship title hanging in the balance, no one knew if the Molokai All-Stars would be able to turn things around.…

New Athletic Leadership for MHS

Athletics at Molokai High School (MHS) will be seeing some new faces this coming school year. With the start of the school year less than a month away, the newly-appointed athletic director, Hokulani Haliniak, is busy assembling her coaches new and old for the upcoming year.

Though originally from Honolulu, Hokulani Haliniak, the new athletic director who will be replacing the recently-retired Camie Kimball, has Molokai roots. Her father was raised on Molokai, and she spent many summers visiting family on the Friendly Isle. She said she had been wanting to return to Molokai for the past 25 years, and she finally got her chance with this position.…

Molokai Holokai 2012

Local paddlers young and old gathered along Molokai’s windy south shores last Saturday for the third annual Molokai Holokai standup paddleboard race, presented by Molokai Ohana Surf Club with Youth in Motion. The 8.5-mile downwind race, which usually draws in fierce competitors from other islands like Maui and Oahu, stayed relatively local this year, in large part because of a recent Molokai-Maui ferry rule that does not accommodate paddleboards.

Kaunakakai Harbor Improvements Meeting This Wednesday

DLNR News Release

The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) will conduct a public
information meeting in Kaunakakai on Wednesday, May 16, to provide information on planned construction activities for improvements to the commuter ferry (Molokai to Maui) and the impact to harbor operations.

“DLNR is the lead agency coordinating the design and construction of this major project, in coordination with the state Department of Transportation-Harbors Division, which manages the commercial harbor side,” said William J. Aila. “Public use of this essential harbor will continue during construction.”

The meeting will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Mitchell Pau‘ole Center, 90 Ainoa St.…

Fire Promotions for Molokai Locals

Two Molokai natives have achieved one of the highest ranks in the Fire Department. Long-time friends and fellow Maui County Fire Captains Travis Tancayo and Petro Garces were both promoted to Battalion Chiefs last week. The highly-coveted position requires many years of experience and training as a career firefighter as well as exceptional leadership skills.

Maui Deputy Fire Chief Robert Shimada describes both men as “honest, hardworking, smart [and] an asset to the department and community.”

They are also a credit to Molokai, according to Fire Inspector Rick Schonely.
“[They are] proof that our born and raised Molokai citizens can reach for the stars and achieve awesome goals,” said Schonely.…

US Coast Guard Support to Ka Molokai Makahiki

Coast Guard News Release
 
The crews of the US Coast Guard cutters Kiska, a 110-foot island class patrol
cutter stationed in Hilo, and the Ahi, an 87-foot patrol cutter stationed in Honolulu are  scheduled to participate in Ka Molokai Makahiki games this weekend .  The cutters will be open for tours to Molokai residents on Saturday morning and afternoon starting at 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Please meet at the ferry enclosure for each escorted tour and learn more
about the Coast Guard Ohana in Hawaii.   Additionally, the 45-foot Response
Boat Medium and its crew from US Coast Guard Station Maui in Maalea also
expect to be here and  participate in the games.

Taking Action

Aloha people of Molokai, I had to instigate/speak up for Molokai about the American Safari Cruises boat cause it seemed as if no one else was. The week before the company made their first landing on Molokai, a test run to tie up, I happened to be at Ali'i fishpond and I passed my time talking with Uncle Merv Dudoit. He asked me if I heard about "the boat" coming. I had no idea what he was talking about so he told me and shared a letter with me from Teri Waros about the coming of a boat. That was my introduction to American Safari Cruises’ plans for Molokai. He also told me that the `Aha Ki`ole board members requested a community meeting of Teri Waros regarding this ship. He told me that "she said no need community meeting.” That raised my red flags high!

Taking Responsibility

I want to share some thoughts about the American Safari Cruise yacht that is now coming to our island on an overnight stay about three times per month.   I first met Dan Blanchard, the owner, at the Hotel Molokai a few years back along with his assistant Amy. They asked how I felt about them coming with a yacht holding a maximum of about 30 people to our island and these patrons would have the choice of choosing tour options which included the trek to Kalaupapa by trail and air.  Of course, I was very open.

Senator Akaka’s Mahalo

On Friday, Aug. 26, many Molokai veterans boarded the ferry to Maui at 5 a.m. to attend an appreciation luncheon coordinated by the Maui Veteran Council for Senator Akaka held at the Maui Tropical Plantation.  More than 500 veterans and guests attended—including the 18 Molokai vets with their yellow shirts that stood out in the crowd.  While politician and veteran groups honored Senator Akaka with proclamations and some tokens, Molokai honored him in Molokai style.  After thanking him for being instrumental in getting many of the Molokai Veterans Affairs (VA) services (VA physician Dr. Hafermann, more psychologists/psychiatrists, benefit counselor and social worker visits, etc.) and health benefits that are available today for some 600 Molokai veterans.

Jesse Dudoit, Ben Bali, and Hank Ellertson presented the ho`okupu (offering) from Molokai that included an all-Molokai products basket (bread, honey, sweet potato chips, Molokai  poi, etc.) donated by Irene Tancayo and a stand-up engraved wood paddle expressing aloha from the Molokai Veterans.  The crowd applauded and Senator Akaka was ecstatic when hearing what was in a cooler being presented to him filled with ophihi from Kama Han, limu `ele`ele (seaweed) and cooked he`e (squid) from Earl Paleka, dried squid from Dobie Enoka, kukui nut from Jesse Dudoit and Karen Joao, limu koho and chili peppa watah. 

Mahalo to the veterans who attended the luncheon to represent the Molokai Veterans. They are Wendy DeFreitas, Dr. David Hafermann, Bo Mahoe, Kama Han, Mac Poepoe, Jesse Dudoit, Earl Paleka, Rosalie Scweiber, Clay Adachi, Sam Kealoha, Jim Bevil, Hank Ellertson, Jr. Habon, Ted Johns, Ben Bali, Manny Garcia, Lou McKee, and myself.
