It was quite the week for Molokai’s 12-year-old Alex Mawae. It all started and finished at Lahaina harbor, with disappointment after his final heat at the Lahaina Surfa’s Stand Up Paddle (SUP) contest, and finishing the week with eyes sparkling joy from the NSSA SUP surf event. After competing in the Lahaina’s Surfa’s SUP contest on Aug. 30, Alex went on to win the National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA)’s SUP division on Sept. 5.

At the Surfa’s SUP, Alex won his heat in the first round, showing that he was in contention for the top three places.…

Twelve-year-old Alex Mawae from Molokai headed to Lahaina last weekend to participate in the Lahaina SUP Surf contest. Having just come back from California taking fourth place in the surfing portion of the Californian event, Alex wanted to see how he faired with the Maui boys. With entries from well-known top international SUP/surfers in the other divisions and a full division of 12 and under, Alex Mawae did well competing against the Maui surfers and taking third place with a very credible performance.

This was Alex’s second SUP/Surfing event compared to the many long distance events he has done since the age 8.…

Twelve-year-old Alex Mawae from Molokai has had quite the year with the fastest growing water sport of Stand Up Paddling while racking up some credible placings in some notable events. Alex recently competed at the Duke’s Ocean Fest on Oahu, taking second place in the under 17s Juniors division with the 2014 Hawaii Paddleboard Championship. The race started at Hawaii Kai and finished at Queens in Waikiki, a distance of just over nine miles.

“Training and getting ready is both fun and hard but doing the race is the most amazing feeling especially when you cross the finish line,” said Alex.…

M2O Brings Racers, Competition, Controversy

More than 200 athletes representing over 20 countries pushed off the sandy shores of Kepuhi Beach last Sunday to compete in the Molokai 2 Oahu (M2O) paddle board world championships. Competing on standup paddles, prone boards, hydrofoils and more, the athletes were joined by escort boats on their 32-mile journey across the notorious Ka’iwi Channel. As the last of the boats disappeared into the blue horizon, many Molokai residents were left with questions, concerns, and, in some cases, trash to contend with. 

The return of the 24th annual M2O after a three-year pandemic break caught many Molokai residents by surprise. …

The Molokai Holokai Ho’olaule’a is to be held on Molokai, July 14-15 and is a combination of some fun ocean paddling and land events.  

The event kicks off on July 14 with the Maui to Molokai Challenge, 27 miles from DT Fleming Beach Park, Maui, at 9 a.m. and the Gorilla Ogo and Mangrove Seed contest kicks off on the Molokai side at Kaunakakai Harbor, Molokai, with Sustainable Molokai. Finally, a late afternoon evening Skate Jam session will be held at the Molokai Community Health Center (MCHC) with local boy Alex Mawae.

Day two is full of action on Molokai, with the Ho’olaule’a bringing out the community and visiting paddlers to enjoy a day of festivities as we celebrate our youth.…

Last Friday, nearly 50 paddlers crossed the channel from Maui to Molokai on stand up paddle boards, one- and two-man outrigger canoes, surfskis and wing foils in the annual two-day Molokai Holokai race. 

“This year’s Molokai was perhaps one of the dreamiest downwind runs of the season according to the 43 paddlers that took to the Pailolo Channel from DT Fleming Beach Park to Kaunakakai,” said Clare Seeger Albino, who organized the race along with her husband, Gordon Albino, and other volunteers. 

Zane Keokoa Schweitzer remained the event’s reigning champion, crossing in a time of 1:33.…

Molokai Holokai Goes Virtual

Like every other sporting event last year, COVID-19 cancelled the annual 2020 Molokai Holokai, a paddling competition of friendly fun for locals as well as acclaimed paddlers and stand up paddlers of all ages. The pandemic also cancelled this summer’s event due to state rules and restrictions, said organizer Clare Albino. But then she decided to try something different – a virtual competition.

“Participants can make their own course in any place, anywhere in the world to make their distances and even break it down in stages and or days,” said Albino, explaining participants upload pictures and times to a virtual leader board, allowing the event to continue during a window that’s open right now.…

Swimmers Compete on Maui

The Molokai High Boys and Girls Swim teams traveled to Kihei Aquatic Center last weekend for two swim meets and had some strong finishes. Head Coach Amanda Labriola was very pleased with her team’s performance.

“We had a fairly good weekend Royden Abafo placed fifth overall in the 200 free, really making a name for him in that event,” she said. “Alex Mawae tried some new events this weekend and really made me and his team proud with his performance in the 500 free. Kapili Naehu-Ramos came back a made her mark for a second year in the 100 fly and Maire Kalawe’s first meet this season and she is showing great growth individually and with the team.”…

Top Finish Channel Crossings Youth in Motion

Two weeks ago, Molokai’s young paddler Alex Mawae was one of three young paddlers in the team Youth in Motion two win the Maui 2 Molokai race in their division. On Saturday, July 18, the 27-mile Maui 2 Molokai race took off toward Kaunakakai Harbor, with Alex, age 13, Kalia Alexiou and Annie Reickert, both 14 years old.

Team Youth in Motion were on fire and with every person they passed, the team got stronger and more determined to finish the race under 5 hours. Kamalo buoy was the home stretch and Alex’s paddling grounds proved to be the most fun with some epic glides and dolphins riding the bumps alongside them.…
