Sharing and Creating Abundance

By Léo Azambuja

In old Hawaii, sharing was a fundamental part of society. It embodied the aloha spirit with love and compassion, allowing for the community to thrive together and for their ‘ohana to grow.

A program at Molokai Public Library, Ko Koā Uka, Ko Koā Kai (Those of the uplands share their crops, those of the seaside share their catch), has been serving as a hub for trading and sharing produce for island residents for almost a year.

“We are featuring some of our farmers and producers on Molokai, sharing what they they’re doing with either food that they’re growing or processing,” said Mercy Ritte, who started the program on last year’s Independence Day of Hawaiian Kingdom, or Lā Kūʻokoʻa, celebrated Nov.…

Program Engages Groups for Cleaner Shores, Ocean

By Léo Azambuja

An ocean-cleanup program at the Hawaii Marine Animal Response-Molokai is only on its sophomore year, but it is already making a big splash on Molokai’s shores and surrounding waters.

HMAR Molokai’s Marine Debris Program, on its second year, continues to successfully remove marine debris from the island’s shorelines by partnering and engaging with established organizations and networks already caring for Molokai’s resources. This includes ongoing organized cleanups with some of the island’s largest landowners, fishpond groups and most recently, with a youth bodyboarding team.

“There are two great things going on here. We are recognizing and supporting our amazing people who are already committing their lives to our shorelines.…

2025 Molokai Hoe

By Léo Azambuja

Two Molokai teams competing in the Molokai Hoe made their island proud; the boys in the junior division placed 7th, and the men in the Open division improved their time from last year. In the end, the Tahitians stole the show by sweeping the first four positions among 106 teams finishing the 41-mile outrigger canoe race from Molokai to Oahu last Sunday.

“We want to give a big congratulations for the team from Tahiti making their crossing of the finish line and being the number one on this year’s 2025 Molokai Hoe World Championship,” Rogue TV host Kamaka Pili said during a live broadcast as Team OPT from Tahiti crossed the finish line in front of the Moana Hotel in Waikiki, Oahu.…

New Digital Hub Opens in Hoʻolehua

By Léo Azambuja

A new space for Molokai residents to access high-speed Internet, print documents, learn how to use computers and even attend remote healthcare appointments opened last week.

“The Molokai Digital Hub has been a dream over the last several years,” said Rosie Davis, executive director of the Maui County Area Health Education Center on Molokai.

The grand opening of the facility at Lanikeha Community Center in Ho‘olehua was Sept. 25, during a ceremony attended by Lt. Gov. Sylvia Luke and state Sen. Lynn DeCoite. On Oct. 1, Molokai’s first digital hub opened to the public.

The facility was created to help close a digital gap on Molokai by providing residents with tools for online connectivity, learning and development, according to Davis.…

Tour Offers Unique View of Kalaupapa

By Léo Azambuja

It is nearly impossible for the general population to understand the suffering, the joys, the daily lives of those diagnosed with Hansen’s disease — also known as leprosy — and sent on a one-way ticket to Kalaupapa, one of the most geographically isolated communities in Hawaii.

But now, people can at least have a glimpse of the last 150 years there. The Kalaupapa Saints Tour opened in September, offering an intimate experience for eight guests at a time, led by a tour guide vetted by one of the last living patients in Kalaupapa.

“People, when they come down, respect and listen what the tour guide gonna say, explain to them what is all about here in Kalaupapa,” 90-year-old Meli Watanuki said.…
