Jazz Night Talk of the Town

Friday, November 19th, 2010

We would like to say a big mahalo to Coffees of Hawaii for their continuing to make their facilities available for the entertainment provided by Molokai JAZZ on Saturday nights, and also the delightful and talented Na Ohana Ho Aloha on Sunday evenings.

They have expanded their food service offerings a great deal, and we always enjoy our Saturday night “date” for dinner and music; we rarely miss it. And we feel the addition of a $5 cover charge is entirely worth it for the joy we receive. Where else can you hear musicians of such caliber that they could be playing at any commercial venue. They are even better than the group I heard last year at a pricey jazz club in Santa Cruz, California.

We would like to extend a big mahalo to the Molokai community, and everyone who participated in the 8th Annual Business and Food Expo to make it a successful event.
Thank you to Mayor Tavares, Maui County Council Chair Danny Mateo and the Office of Economic Development for partnering with the Molokai Chamber of Commerce and ensuring this event happens each year.
Mahalo to all of our sponsors, Monsanto Molokai, Young Brothers, American Savings Bank, and Alamo Rent a Car for their support.

Mahalo For Support to Represent

Friday, November 19th, 2010

Mahalo nui loa to everyone who supported me in my effort to represent you on the Hawaii School Board of Education.

I would like to thank my dedicated family, friends and island neighbors who helped me throughout the entire campaign and never wavered.  A special mahalo to the ILWU, the Carpenter's Union, and the Hawaii State Teacher's Association for their support and hard work on Maui, Lanai, Molokai, Hawaii and Kauai.  Without your efforts I would not have been successful in the campaign.

‘The Ultimate Sacrifice’

Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Army, Coast Guard and many others. Vietnam, World War II, Korea and Desert Storm. Veterans of different backgrounds, hometowns and fighting grounds came together for this year’s Veterans Day services on Molokai.

The Molokai Veterans Caring for Veterans hosted a ceremony at the Ho`olehua Veteran’s Cemetery last Thursday morning, attended by family, friends and volunteers from Molokai Middle School.

During a solemn rendition of taps by Rob Stephenson on the saxophone, the veterans released 21 red, white and blue pigeons in lieu of a 21 gun salute.

Bob Aldridge joined the Molokai veterans group nearly 10 years ago for the camaraderie.

people shouldn’t have to go to war to be safe,” she said.

“In a world of uncertainty, someone has to make a stand.”

Veterans Day: More than Just Nov. 11
Veterans visit Kualapu`u School

By Diane Abraham

On this past Wednesday, Nov. 10, my fourth graders at Kualapu`u School found out first-hand that Nov. 11 was more than just a holiday and a day without school. We were honored to have two veterans who had served in Vietnam come and share their mana`o and answer questions.  Many thanks to Larry Helm and Bo Mahoe for their time and insight as 20 fourth grade boys and girls got to find out the sacrifices and experiences that our veterans go through for our freedoms, as well as the things our military men and women do to benefit others during times of natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis.

Veterans give up time from family and friends in ways that most of us cannot fathom. For these American heroes, it’s not about being honored on one day each year. Generally, it’s a 24/7 duty that involves humane decisions. If Nov. 11 came and went without you thanking a veteran, please do so now: it’s more than just a one day thing.

Paris in Paradise

Trying to keep a low profile, Paris Hilton snuck over to Molokai on Friday. She was spotted mid-morning having breakfast at Paddlers Inn with her boyfriend, Las Vegas promoter Cy Waits, who has family tries to the Friendly Isle.

Wondering what an heiress has for breakfast? The two shared a Tsunami Sandwich, French toast and a papaya before running errands at Friendly Market and Molokai Drugs – but not before stopping to take pictures with curious on-lookers and Paddlers staff. Above, from left: Kamuela Purdy, Vanetta Kansana, Darlene Waki and Paris Hilton.

A Novel Idea

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

November is known by many names: Native American Heritage Month, Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month, and Movember (awarness for men’s health. For literary lovers, it’s a 30-day period of character naming, plot developing and constant prose in celebration of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo).

With over 3.1 million words and 900 members strong, Hawaii is writing away.  You too can tap into your inner Shakespeare or Grisham by attending weekly “write-ins” held in Kaunakakai.

Alestra Menendez, a Kualapu`u School teacher, is hosting local writing workshops for NaNoWriMo participants to discuss their work, offer advice and keep each other on track with their goals.
