National Arts Prize Winner Credits Molokai Roots 

One of the most prestigious awards for the arts, the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize, was recently awarded to Vicky Holt Takamine of Oahu, for her work as a kumu hula and executive director of the PA’I Foundation. With the prize, which includes a cash amount of $450,000, Takamine joins the likes of Robert Redford, Bob Dylan, Spike Lee and more. 

 

While she lives and works over on Oahu, Holt Takamine explained that it was time spent on Molokai as a girl during which she was first exposed to many of the Hawaiian cultural arts she champions today. 

 

Holt Takamine’s family would spend their summers with the Place ‘ohana on Molokai’s east end.…

Prince Kuhio Play Brings History to Life 

As part of the Hawaii Pono’i Coalition, a play honoring the late Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana’ole Pi’ikoi came to Molokai for a special performance at Kulana ‘Oiwi. In collaboration with the Ho’olehua Homesteaders Association, the play sought to educate audiences on the biography and character of one of Hawaii’s most famous leaders. 

 

Written by Victoria Nalani Kneubuhl and directed by Sammie Choy, the play covers the life of Prince Kuhio. Starting with his early years in Hawaii and adoption by his aunt and uncle Queen Kapi’olani and King Kalakaua, the play follows Kuhio’s journey throughout the turbulent years of the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii, subsequent rebellion, imprisonment, and eventual career as Hawaii’s delegate to the U.S.…

In an effort to expand Alzheimer’s and dementia research in native communities, Justina Tavana and her team of researchers from Brigham Young University’s Natives Engaged in Alzheimer’s Research program brought the Brain Train study to Molokai on Nov. 1 and 2. Funded by the National Institute on Aging, this initiative aims to develop culturally tailored research and treatments for Alzheimer’s and dementia specifically for American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander populations. The event on Molokai offered local residents an opportunity to learn about Alzheimerʻs and dementia research and to participate in a brain health screening. This milestone event highlighted the importance of this research, especially in underserved communities, and the need for awareness, early detection, and culture specific interventions for prevention and care.…

Joseph Sotero Manaba

Joseph “Joe” Sotero Manaba was born to Sotero and Marie Manaba on March 19, 1941 at Shingle’s Memorial Hospital in Ho’olehua, Molokai. On the morning of October 10, 2024, after fulfilling a beautiful 83 years of life, Joe left his Earthly home in Kamiloloa, to be welcomed into his new eternal home with God.

Joe is survived by his wife Dolores “Dodie” Manaba; children, Tania Manaba, Desmund (Christy) Manaba, Tertia Keliiholokai, Dedric (Jersula) Manaba, Deidre Manaba, and Jordan “Koa” (Rebecca) Manaba; 18 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and his sister, Paulette Kortekaas. Joe was preceded in death by his brother Randolph “Randy” Manaba, and his sister, Mildred “Millie” Hayes.…

November and December Golf Aces

Rodney Reyes and Scott Hemenway are the November and December Aces for the Hui O Kukui Golf Club.
Two aces are handed out in November to make the 12 participants for the Ace of Aces Club Championship on Dec. 7 at Iconic Ironwood Hills Golf Course. The winner will be president of the club for the next calendar year.

Hot Rod Reyes, Molokai professional golfer and all-around good guy, shot 44-42 for a gross total of 86. With his 16 handicap, his 70 net got him the November Ace.

Mr. Scottie Too Hottie Hemenway is a retired Molokai Middle School science teacher and one of the icons of the sport at iconic Ironwood Hills.…

Cluett Pactol Wins National Award

Hawaii Public Radio’s Maui Nui reporter, Catherine Cluett Pactol, represented the station at the Edward R. Murrow Awards Gala in New York City last month to accept a national award for feature reporting.
Catherine’s story from 2023, “Aboard a Small Plane, This Maui Pilot Takes Animal Rescues to New Heights,” follows two Maui women who volunteer their time to transport essential supplies and rescue animals aboard their yellow Cessna.

Lantern Ceremony Honors Victims of Suicide

Under phosphorescent pink skies, community members waded into the waters outside the Molokai Community Health Center, participating in what has become a memorable annual tradition for many. A collaboration between Hospice Maui and the Guzeiji Soto Mission, the lantern ceremony is a way to honor and celebrate those who have passed away.

“My hope is that it helps to bring peace and comfort for those that are mourning,” explained Barbara Helm, a bereavement coordinator for Hospice Maui and one of the founders of the event.

Molokai Votes

Along with millions of voters across the U.S., Molokai residents participated in the Nov. 5 U.S. elections. Incumbent women came out strong in this year’s local elections. Here’s a breakdown of how Molokai voted for some of its most crucial representatives.

Voter turnout overall for Molokai was 56.6 percent, only slightly behind the state average of 60.5 percent, but ahead of the county average, which was 55 percent. Mana’e led the way for topside Molokai precincts with 60 percent of registered voters turning out. Kaunakakai was next with 57.2 percent participation, followed by Ho’olehua and then Maunaloa. Kalawao County had slightly higher participation rate with 18 of their 28 registered voters, or 64.2 percent, participating in the election.…
