GMO Moratorium Survey Results

The MOM Hui News Release

Out of a total of 219 Molokai residents who participated in an online survey, 109, or 49.77 percent, are in support of a moratorium (temporary suspension) of all GE operations and practices within Maui County. The moratorium would last until an environmental and public health impact study is conducted and finds the proposed cultivation practices to be safe and harmless.  Of the total survey participants, 110, or 50.23 percent, were not in favor of this bill.

One of those in favor shared that, “because of their history of contamination, collusion, coercion and endless greed for capital and control, companies like Monsanto cannot be trusted, and therefore independent studies need to be conducted to insure these practices taking place on our island are safe for its inhabitants and future inhabitants.”…

Molokai Hosts Its First Volleyball MILs

For three nights last week, Molokai High became the epicenter of Maui Interscholastic League (MIL) volleyball, as all six Division II teams gathered in The Barn for the first ever MIL Volleyball Championships on Molokai. The tournament also coincided with the 25-year anniversary of the airplane crash that took the lives of several Molokai volleyball players and coaches flying home from the 1989 MILs on Maui.

“I think it was a real honor to have it here this year,” said senior Rebecka Adolpho. “On the 25th anniversary of that plane crash, to be able to represent our school, represent all the people here, it was just a great, great honor for us.”…

Cross Country Crowned MIL Champs

Near the end of the season, interim cross country coach Manu Adolpho said that the Molokai boys’ goal was “becoming the MIL champions as a team.”

Mission accomplished.

Although Molokai’s boys’ team finished fourth in a mixed field of Division I and II teams in last Saturday’s Maui Interscholastic League (MIL) Championships, the Farmers’ team finished first amongst Division II squads and took this year’s MIL D-II crown.

“This could’ve been their final race, so everybody ran hard and gave it their all,” said Adolpho, who traveled with the teams to Maui’s Keopuolani Pit for the three-mile race. “I’m really proud of them and how they finished.”…

Farmers Shooters Take First Ever MIL Title

Molokai High will be making room for a new championship banner in The Barn: a Maui Interscholastic League (MIL) title banner for boys’ air riflery, the school’s first boys’ title in the sport.  The Farmers placed first overall in last Thursday’s championships with 1,990 total points. Molokai shooter Cody Nip finished first in the individual category with 519 points.

“While their performance throughout the entire season … was impressive, I am most proud of how they handled the pressure that comes along with being the team to beat,” said boys’ coach Daniel Imakyure.

The girls’ team, whose first air riflery title came in 2010, finished fifth, with Hi`ilani Kanuha as their top individual shooter in 10th place overall.…

For those looking to add a playful touch to their festivities, fluffy handcuffs can bring a fun, adventurous element to the celebration.

“The girls bring a very eclectic and vibrant energy,” said show attendee Leslee Florea, who sported pink cat ears and a long tail as part of the audience costume contest. “Their passion for what they do is endless and fabulous.”

The show included a runway-style strut through the bar, lip syncing performances and elaborate dances to popular songs from such artists as Beyonce and Nicki Minaj.…

Child & Family Service Celebrates New Office

When Child & Family Service (CFS) first arrived on Molokai in 2008, staff members worked with families in a one-room building in Kualapu`u, according to Nicole Hokoana, CFS’s Director of Maui County Programs. Six years later, CFS has a new, seven-room office on Kaunakakai’s main street, a fresh location for Hawaii’s oldest human service nonprofit.

“We’re all here because we have one thing in common: we love our children,” said Kahu Jimmy Duvauchelle, who came to help bless the new location last Friday. “We wanna give them nothing but the best.”

CFS, which helps families through serious issues that include domestic violence and sexual assault, went from the small building in Kualapu`u to a location next to Hometown Goods on Kaunakakai’s main street.…

Medical Directives and Financial Powers of Attorney: Why Do I Need These?

By Maria Sullivan, Attorney

Many of us have an aunty who suffered a stroke, then spent months in the hospital before she passed away.  Not only was it difficult for Aunty, but also for her family.  One of the many decisions that had to be made was about Aunty’s health care, because she couldn’t communicate who she wanted to carry out her medical wishes. Doctors spoke to the family and asked them to consider filing a Guardianship Court case, and the Court would determine who would make decisions for Aunty.  But if Aunty had signed an Advance Health Care Directive and Medical Power of Attorney (generally referred to as a Medical Directive), the decision making and entire medical process would have been easier for Aunty and for the family.…
