County Poised to Enforce GE Moratorium, Lawsuit Expected

A highly disputed voter initiative to ban the growing of genetically engineered crops passed in Maui County in last Tuesday’s General Election by a narrow margin of 50 percent to 48 percent, with just over 800 votes’ difference.

On Molokai, all of the island’s four precincts voted no by a ratio of nearly two to one, with 63 percent voting against the moratorium and 34 percent favoring it island-wide, according to stats from Hawaii’s elections website.

The initiative calls for a moratorium until a detailed environmental impact study of the harms associated with growing genetically engineered organisms has been completed and reviewed by the County Council.…

Farmers Pack Up Rifles for the Season

When Molokai’s history-making air riflery season came to an end, the Farmers were exactly where they wanted to be: at the state championship on Oahu. The MIL-champion Farmers shot their final competition last Tuesday, with the boys’ team coming in fifth out of seven boys’ teams and individual girls’ shooter Hi`ilani Kanuha finishing 50th in a field of 60.

“It was an eye opener and so much fun for the kids,” said girls’ coach Chinky Hubbard, who attended the state competition for the first time as a coach. “… We went over there and just tried to beat our scores that we performed at MILs.”…

‘Lightning Strikes Twice’

Two Molokai High seniors got a quite a surprise two weeks ago. Little did Sarah Jenkins and Luke Kikukawa know that as they were sitting in their respective classes, a top secret mission was underway.

Sneaking through the halls of Molokai High with two giant, four-foot $10,000 checks, MHS Principal Stan Hao, Nordstrom Ala Moana Store Manager Brian Tatsumura, and other representatives and faculty stopped in front of two classrooms. They were preparing to make a big announcement: Jenkins and Kikukawa had each won a hefty check from the Nordstrom Scholarship Program.

“It’s sort of like a SWAT Team conducting maneuvers to take their opponent by stratagem in secret,” said Hao of the surprise operation.…

Football Next Stop: MIL Title Game

Farmers Football played their last home game of the season Saturday, defeating the Hana Dragons 71-21 and improving their record 4-1. Ena Victorino scored four touchdowns, while John-Michael Mokiao-Duvauchelle threw two touchdown passes, and Decker Bicoy returned an interception for a score.

Winning the Maui Interscholastic League eight-player football tournament semi-final game assures the Farmers a spot in the MIL Championship. They will play Seabury on Thursday at Maui’s War Memorial Stadium.…

Molokai’s Own Named Statewide Educator of the Year

Every day, Molokai teachers nurture our students in the classroom, spend hours of their own time preparing lessons and assisting youth in afterschool programs, and carry the weight of ensuring the success of the future generation. One Molokai educator was recognized in particular this year for doing it all with grace, and going above and beyond her job description. Molokai Middle School (MMS) Hawaiian Language Immersion teacher `Iolani Kuoha received the Hawaii Association of Middle Schools Educator of the Year award last weekend – and she said she accepted the honor on behalf of her fellow teachers.

“I represent not only myself but all the teachers,” she said.…

GMO Moratorium Survey Results

Out of a total of 219 Molokai residents who participated in an online survey, 109, or 49.77 percent, are in support of a moratorium (temporary suspension) of all GE operations and practices within Maui County. The moratorium would last until an environmental and public health impact study is conducted and finds the proposed cultivation practices to be safe and harmless.  Of the total survey participants, 110, or 50.23 percent, were not in favor of this bill.

One of those in favor shared that, “because of their history of contamination, collusion, coercion and endless greed for capital and control, companies like Monsanto cannot be trusted, and therefore independent studies need to be conducted to insure these practices taking place on our island are safe for its inhabitants and future inhabitants.”…

The Hawaiian Language Immersion program at Molokai Middle School, `O Hina i ka Malama, is having a benefit concert and dinner on Friday, Nov. 7 at the Molokai Community Health Center (Old Pau Hana Inn) at 5 p.m., under the banyan tree.  Dinner tickets are $50 per person and our VIP tables are $1000.  We have a great lineup of entertainment starring our own Middle Schools students of `O Hina i ka Malama, Na Pua Ho`oheno, and guest artist Darren Benitez and friends.

Proceeds of the benefit concert and dinner, along with a silent auction that night will support our students to travel to Aotearoa, New Zealand. …

There will be a Farm Tax Workshop held Nov. 6, 2014 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Maui Economic Opportunity (MEO) Business Development Classroom.  Michael Holl will be the returning to Molokai to speak to farmers and ranchers about business taxes. This workshop will help you manage your labor, financial and legal risks. Holl, who is from Oahu, is an enrolled agent who is a federally-authorized tax practitioner, licensed by the U.S. Department of the Treasury to negotiate with the IRS on behalf of taxpayers.

Managing agricultural operations successfully often requires far more than understanding production alone, particularly when farmers and ranchers must navigate changing tax obligations, labor costs, compliance requirements, and long-term financial planning at the same time.…

A public open house for the Molokai Community Plan Update will be held on Saturday, Nov. 15 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Kaunakakai Elementary School cafeteria.  The purpose of the open house is to present and review key information that will be used during the community plan update process. Because the event is organized as an open house, people can drop in at any time. Molokai Hosts Its First Volleyball MILs

For three nights last week, Molokai High became the epicenter of Maui Interscholastic League (MIL) volleyball, as all six Division II teams gathered in The Barn for the first ever MIL Volleyball Championships on Molokai. The tournament also coincided with the 25-year anniversary of the airplane crash that took the lives of several Molokai volleyball players and coaches flying home from the 1989 MILs on Maui.

“I think it was a real honor to have it here this year,” said senior Rebecka Adolpho. “On the 25th anniversary of that plane crash, to be able to represent our school, represent all the people here, it was just a great, great honor for us.”…
