STEM for Molokai Youth

MEDB News Release

This year, Molokai’s students were among the thousands of youth empowered through science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills, thanks to the Maui Economic Development Board (MEDB)’s Ke Alahele Education Fund. On Molokai, three programs received MEDB’s grant awards.

At Kaunakakai Elementary, funds went to support the school’s extracurricular robotics program, and a “weXplore” curriculum for fifth graders that promoted college and career readiness through a variety of inquiry-based STEM projects in the classroom.  At Molokai Middle School, funds were earmarked for the school’s robotics program that helped expose students to STEM opportunities and skills.

“MEDB’s grant funds are enabling local schools and organizations to create enriching STEM education programs,” said Ryan Churchill, MEDB Education Committee Chair.…

Dr. Corboy Awarded in Vietnam

Hawaiian Eye Foundation News Release

The Hawaiian Eye Foundation was presented a medal for People’s Health by the Socialist Republic of Vietnam on Dec. 11, in ceremonies at the Hue Central Hospital, Hue City, Viet Nam.  The medal was awarded to Molokai’s John M Corboy, M.D., president of the Hawaiian Eye Foundation for “his supportive contributions to the development of Vietnam’s Health Branch.”

Making the presentation was Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Viet Tien, who cited the foundation’s humanitarian decade of training over 1500 Vietnamese eye surgeons in advanced medical and surgical eye care.

In remarks to Nguyen Thi Doan, Vice President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Corboy praised the foundation’s many volunteer surgeons and technicians who have donated their time, travel, and expertise since 2004 to train their Vietnamese ophthalmologist colleagues in Hue and Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon).…

Molokai’s Miss Congeniality

This year’s Miss Hawaii Rodeo, Cheyanne Keliihoomalu, made history as the first contestant from Molokai to compete in the Miss Rodeo America Pageant earlier this month. She came home with what she called “an amazingly fun experience” and an award – being named Miss Congeniality, bringing with it a $1000 scholarship.

“It was a very tough week and so far out of my comfort zone,” wrote Keliihoomalu in a letter to the Dispatch. “However, it was an amazingly fun experience and I got to experience it with a phenomenal group of women from all over the country, who I can now call my friends.”…

Ingenuity on Display in Holiday Expo

Trix cereal treats, ceramic fish and studies on legumes in soil—all of it came from the minds and hands of Molokai High students at the school’s Holiday Exhibition last Wednesday. A collaboration between the Fine Arts department and Career and Technical Education (CTE), the exhibition gave the public a glimpse of the projects students are creating to meet needs and solve real-life problems on Molokai.

As part of hypothetical businesses created in class, students offered samples of food, haircut services, jewelry and other products to potential customers passing through the exhibition in the school’s cafeteria. Aliana Eustaquio and Ida Pongmulee invented a business called Molokai Upcycling, taking used clothes and transforming them into newly designed jean shorts, skirts and bow ties.…

Winter Sports Preview, Part 2

Although the weather is turning colder, the Molokai winter sport athletes are just getting warmed up. With the Maui Interscholastic League (MIL) winter season approaching, Molokai High’s teams are training to compete in basketball, paddling, swimming and wrestling. In the second of a two-part series, the Dispatch takes a look at these teams as they prepare to make their mark in the MIL.

Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball

The spotlight will be on Molokai basketball within the league this season. In February, the school will host the MIL Division II boys’ basketball tournament. Meanwhile, the girls will seek their third league title in a row and a place at the state championships.…

Molokai artists ushered in the holidays last week, gathering to share their work at the Public Library in the third annual art show of Molokai Arts Center (MAC) members.

“To me, it’s a chance for the organization to thank individual artists and for them to get some exposure – and to see themselves as professional artists,” said potter Dan Bennett, MAC Treasurer and founding member. “We have to push some to enter because they don’t think their art is good enough, which to me is absurd.”

Art in all colors, shapes and sizes – ranging from the useful to the whimsical – made an appearance at the show, representing at least 30 member artists, Bennett said.…

12 Days Adrift: The Story of Ron Ingraham

What began as a routine fishing trip to Lanai on Thanksgiving Day turned into a 12-day battle of survival at sea for Molokai’s Ron Ingraham. While his friends planned his funeral and authorities gave up the search, Ingraham lived on fish he caught, bailed all night while 20-foot waves crashed over his boat, and — having nearly given up all hope — “jerry-rigged” his water-sodden radio for one final signal for help that led to his rescue and a reunion with his estranged son.

Sixty-seven-year-old Ingraham wasn’t expecting a mishap at sea, but his lifestyle prepared him for it. He’s a fisherman who lives on his 25-foot sailboat, tied at a slip at Kaunakakai Harbor.…

Subsistence Fishing Designation Moves Forward

 

Community members are joining with state officials to develop a designation for Molokai’s north shoreline that would sustainably support marine resources, protect traditional fishing practices, prohibit commercial harvest and facilitate community involvement in resource management decisions.

The Mo`omomi Community Based Subsistence Fishing Area (CBSFA) would extend from Ilio Point on the northwestern tip of Molokai, east to Kaholaiki Bay, near Pelekunu Valley. As it is currently written, the CBSFA would follow the contours of the coastline and extend out one half mile. The Kawa`aloa Bay Protected Area is a subzone with the CBSFA, with a subset of rules specific to it.…

Although the weather is turning colder, the Molokai winter sport athletes are just getting warmed up. Wrestling

This season, the boys’ and girls’ teams have 19 wrestlers apiece. The girls’ roster is rife with experience, with 11 returning wrestlers, while the boys’ team welcomes a relatively young squad that includes seven returning wrestlers and six freshmen.

“The number of returning girls makes us strong ‘cause we’ve got some experience to work with,” said Coach Randy Manley, who added that this year’s squad is the biggest girls’ team he’s ever seen from the school.…

Glowing Good Cheer

When night fell last Saturday, Kaunakakai came alive. Residents welcomed in the holidays with a dazzling array of lights and entertainment in the island’s Annual Christmas Light Parade and Ho`olaule`a.

“We just do this for the community, for the kids,” said Kelvin Keanini, who marched with the Frozen-themed float created by the Molokai Latter-day Saints Youth. “… Everybody stepped up their production with the floats.”

According to organizers, 25 groups participated in the parade. County Mayor Alan Arakawa traveled from Maui to serve as the grand marshal. The glittering floats included a Hawaiian style “12 Days of Christmas” display, a gingerbread house, light-adorned boats and Santa Claus.…
