Bennett Pottery Celebrates 40 Years

On Nov. 29, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bennett Pottery celebrates 40 years of making ceramics on Molokai.  Since 1974, potter Dan Bennett has been creating unique stoneware and porcelain utilitarian ware at a reasonable cost for the Molokai community.  Bennett is a founding member of the Molokai Arts Center (MAC) and teaches ceramics for University of Hawaii Maui College on site, as well as beginning and intermediate classes for adults.  He can be found at the MAC teaching three days each week.

Aside from a wide range of pottery designed for functional use, this year features some small sculpture pieces of animals and structures, as well as work from salt and raku firings.…

Students Learn Hands-on at Future Fest

Normally, high school students operating backhoes on the school’s front lawn would be cause for alarm. However, last Wednesday it was all part of Molokai High School’s Future Fest, a day-long sampling of potential colleges and careers for MHS students.

According to Lisa Takata, representatives from over 12 colleges and universities from both Hawaii and the mainland attended the Fest, answering students’ questions on everything from possible majors to athletic scholarships.

“Most of them talked about what they need to do to come to school,” said Tammy Fonoimoana, a financial aid counselor at Brigham Young University-Hawaii.  “… A lot of questions about sports.…

MHS One Step Closer to Science Labs

Slowly but surely, Molokai High School (MHS) is making its way toward the science building of school officials’ dreams. Since MHS split from the middle school a decade ago, students have been using classrooms that lack the amenities of a standard high school science lab. Without multiple gas- and water-equipped lab stations, students often have to gather around computers or even a single table to observe experiments.

In early 2013, the DOE and school officials began designing a new science building to change all that, and last Wednesday, project planners met another project goal. The Molokai Planning Commission approved Department of Education (DOE) requests to change land and zoning designations on the area of school property where the DOE wants to build a brand new science facility.…

Molokai Honors Its Veterans

Molokai is far quieter and slower than a battlefield abroad, but for the island’s war veterans, the Friendly Isle is exactly where they want to be.

“I’m glad to be home,” said Army veteran Samuel Makaiwi, who served in Iraq.

On Nov. 11, residents and veterans gathered in Kaunakakai’s Memorial Park to honor those who dedicated their lives to defending the country. The ceremony included the singing of the national and state anthems, speeches and short musical performances.

Maui County Councilmember Stacy Helm Crivello thanked the veterans and the families for their service and sacrifices. Like the biblical prophet Isaiah, she said, veterans, too, responded unselfishly to a call to serve.…

Sunday, Oct. 5 was a day that had been on my mind since returning to the Big Apple after living on Molokai for a year. It was the day I would get to reunite with Molokai, when a group of 10th and 11th grade students and four wonderful chaperons visited New York City. When I first laid eyes on the students, I was shocked at how well they fit in, they had so flawlessly adapted to urban fashion—tight jeans, fancy shoes—they looked like New Yorkers yet! While walking around with the students, I started asking them if they noticed any similarities between Molokai and Manhattan.…

The Maui County Office of Economic Development Molokai Kuha`o Business Center along with MEO Business Development Center will partner with ONABEN-A Native American Business Network to present a series of business workshops on Thursday, Nov. 13. The workshops will be held at the County of Maui Mayor’s Office of Economic Development Kuha`o Business Center which is at 2 Kamoi Street, Suite 600, Kaunakakai, HI, 96748.

Strong Start for MMS Robotics

The 2014-2015 VEX IQ Robotics season has begun successfully with two regular season tournaments for Molokai Middle School (MMS) Robotics.

The first tournament was the 2014 VIV aio Maui Fair VEX IQ Tournament held on Oct. 4 at Baldwin High.  Ten teams from Maui County competed in the VEX IQ division, including both 434M and 434K teams from Molokai.  Team 434M Menehune Farmers won the Team Excellence Award and Trophy and qualified for states.  Team 434M members were Kaitlin DeRouin, Kodie Place, and Makani Davis.

The second tournament was the 2014 aio Hawaii VEX IQ Qualifying Tournament on Nov.…

Storyteller Captivates Molokai Audience

Before she visited Molokai as a world-traveling, professional storyteller, Diane Ferlatte was just trying to get her son Joey interested in reading. Books couldn’t pull him away from the TV, so Ferlatte herself became the characters: a croaking frog, a gravelly voiced old woman, a hissing snake. Suddenly, Joey started to pay attention.

“He was listening like it was live TV,” Ferlatte recalled. “I went, ‘Ohhh, I see what I have to do now.’”

Her animated character impressions have been capturing listeners’ attention ever since. Last Monday afternoon at the Molokai Public Library, Ferlatte kept keiki and kupuna riveted as she passed on tales and songs from her family, her travels and other cultures.…
