Sust`aina ble Molokai’s newly launched Molokai Food Hub is seeking locally grown fruits and vegetables.  In January, we officially became the vendor for the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) for Maunaloa Elementary School.  This is a federally funded snack program, which allows students to receive a snack of a fresh fruit or vegetable two to three times per week.  As the vendor, we are aiming to provide as much Molokai-grown fruit and vegetables as possible, so please call or email us if you would like to be a supplier (560-5410 or harmonee@sustainablemolokai.org).

The program is open to growers who can provide 60 servings of fresh fruit or vegetable (minimum serving size of 1/2 cup), and they will be paid fair market value. …

Local farm brings lessons of the `aina to life

A handful of Kilohana Elementary school students stared down uncertainly into the thick, gloopy mud of the lo`i kalo below them.

“Come on, ladies, let’s go! Jump in!”

Kilohana educational assistant Teon Simmons was trying to coax them into the lo`i, where three of their schoolmates were already wading and pulling weeds from the ankle deep muck. Wedged in the middle of the patch, farm owner Jo-Ann Simms was teaching the students how to gently swing long bunches of weeds to shake excess mud back into the lo`i.

Jo-Ann understood the hesitance to dive into the dirty, tedious task, a job she’s been doing since she was a kid.…

Man Charged with Attempted Murder

A Molokai man has been charged with attempted murder after he rammed into his ex-girlfriend’s vehicle in Kaunakakai on Jan. 7. The collision sent his vehicle through the fence and into a tree at Kaunakakai Elementary School. School was out for winter break at the time.

The 38-year-old man, Pakluke Lau, also known as Ula, was flown to Oahu to be treated for injuries, while the 35-year-old woman was taken to Molokai General Hospital and soon released.

On Jan. 25, Lau was arrested on charges of first-degree attempted murder, two counts of terroristic threatening in the first degree, two counts of violating an order for protection and reckless driving.…

Farmers Gear Up for MILs, States

Tiebreaker Sends Paddling to States

Molokai’s girls had to race twice on Saturday to earn a place at the state championships. The Farmers finished third in the MIL’s final regatta and came in second in a tie-breaking race to earn the MIL’s last state berth.

“It was pretty intense and really nerve-racking, but we made it,” said paddler Waipuna Kelly-Paleka.

Seabury Hall had already been guaranteed a place before Saturday’s race. After Molokai finished third, the Farmers were locked in a three-way season tie with King Kekaulike and Kamehameha Maui, forcing a second, shorter race.

“Thankfully, during practice I have them do half-mile sprints nearly back to back,” said Head Coach Stefanie Hubbard.…

Controlled Fire Planned for Kalama`ula

Between Feb. 2 and Feb. 7, Maui County Fire Department will employ prescribed, or controlled, fire in the Kalama`ula area. This multi-agency effort will be an exercise to satisfy national requirements to be certified as a Type 3 Incident Management Team, provide live fire training to personnel and remove hazardous levels of overgrown plant material.

During these dates, controlled fires may take place between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. The live training will be conducted north of the old Kalama`ula area and west of the Kalama`ula Mauka subdivision. The burn area will consist of 60 acres total, broken down into separate blocks to be burned each day of the exercise.…

Paddling in the Hunt for States

Molokai’s girls’ paddling crew came in third out of six teams at the MIL’s fourth regatta of the season. The Lady Farmers finished in four minutes, 33.05 seconds at Kahului Harbor last Saturday, their best time of the season thus far. Molokai’s crew included Kelsie Espiritu-Tanabe (Seat No. 1), Kaitlynn Reich-Colipano (Seat No. 2), Kamalani Puailihau (Seat No. 3), Waipuna Kelly-Paleka (Seat No. 4), Kysha Kawano (Seat No. 5) and Hiilani Kaiama-Kanuha (Seat No. 6).

“We did quite well on this race, but we feel there’s always room for improvement,” said Kawano. “Our team will be focusing on bettering our turns and finishes and also, ways we can fix our small errors that will help us finish with a better time.”…

Back-to-Back Titles for Molokai Wrestlers

Molokai wrestlers Saydee Makaiwi and Kui Han repeated as champions of their divisions for the second week in a row. Last Saturday at the Farmers’ second meet, Makaiwi took the girls’ 138-pound weight class, while Han won the boys’ 285-pound title over Lahainaluna’s Connor Mowat, who recently went undefeated at the “Battle for the Belt” wrestling tournament in Temecula, Calif.

“Both Kui and Saydee have matured in their skills, and both are working hard in practice,” said Head Coach Randy Manley.

Three Molokai boys had second-place finishes: Caele Manley (113), Rayden DeKneef (152 B) and Jordan Boswell (170). Kailaoe Cabanting, who won the 117-pound division in the Farmers’ first meet on Jan.…

A Heart for Higher Education

Thirty years ago, when Donna Haytko-Paoa began her career as Coordinator of what’s now known as the University of Hawaii’s Maui College, Molokai site, pursuing higher education on Molokai was a struggle.

In the early 80s, Molokai residents wanting to attain a college degree would scrunch into child-size seats in a classroom at Kaunakakai Elementary School. When it’s time to enter college, virtual learning at online colleges for military is a good option.

However, in case of a lost diploma, a replacement associate degree can be obtained by contacting the registrar’s office and providing proof of identity and enrollment. The process typically involves submitting a formal request along with any required documentation and fees to ensure that the replacement degree is issued correctly.…

DeRouin Named Official Athletic Director

The athletic director (AD)’s office is now Lee DeRouin’s to keep. After four months of serving as interim athletic director for Molokai High School (MHS), DeRouin was recently named the official AD.

He stepped in temporarily in August after former AD Hoku Haliniak left to accept a position as Director of Sports Information for the Hawaii High School Athletic Association. DeRouin was one of five candidates being considered for the AD job, according to Daniel Espaniola, who was on the selection committee.

“He’s new to the job but he has tremendous potential for growth in the position and making good things happen for the school,” said Espaniola, who works for the Department of Education as an Educator Effectiveness System Educational Officer.…

Changing a broken bicycle chain has become second nature for 10-year-old Isaiah Hanchett-Lopez.

“I like to use a screwdriver when I do it,” he said matter of factly. “When you’re unscrewing that, it gets loose, so you push it up, take that off…” He continued to rattle off several steps with ease.

It’s just one of the many handy skills that Hanchett-Lopez and the kids at the Molokai Youth Center have picked up since the Center started repairing bikes for free nearly a month ago.

“There’s something magical about a kid and a bike,” said Youth Specialist Travis Ritte, who repairs bikes at the Center.…
