Softball Finishes 8th in State

The Molokai Lady Farmers Girls Softball team played in the DII Softball State Championships at Patsy Mink Field on Maui two weeks. After falling in the first game against Kalani 5-2, the Farmers rebounded to defeat Konawaena 11-1 in five innings and advanced to the consolation championship game against the Kauai Red Raiders. Molokai came up short in the consolation championship game losing to The Red Raiders 14-4 and placing 8th in the state in DII Girls softball.

Head Coach Kawehi Horner was proud of his team’s season.

“It was as an awesome season with lots of growth for the players and the coaches!”…

College Graduation Honors Family Learning

More than 100 Molokai graduates of all ages were honored for completing an important milestone in their lives two weeks ago as they earned associate, bachelor and masters degrees on Molokai. Every four years, University of Hawaii Maui College Molokai campus holds a commencement ceremony and this year’s 41 graduation participates represented just a portion of the 116 students that received degrees between 2012 and 2016.

The graduates — ranging in age from 17 to 59 — are 75 percent Native Hawaiian. They represent all walks of life, including three couples, two siblings and three military veterans. They are parents to 38 kids.…

9 Valedictorians Among MHS Graduates

Twelve percent of this year’s 73 Molokai High School graduates were valedictorians and 33 percent have already earned college credits.

“This is unprecedented,” said Principal Stan Hao. “This is the most [valedictorians] we’ve ever had. In farming terms, we have a bumper crop of really smart kids.”

In the high school’s graduation ceremony for the class of 2016 last Friday, student accomplishments were honored, songs were sung, tears were cried and Farmer pride was on display.

Members of the class of 2016 helped the school claim four MIL team championships in football, girls basketball, baseball and boys volleyball, as well as individual champions in wrestling, track and field and judo, according to Hao.…

Cable Outage Caused by Water Leak

Oceanic Time Warner Cable customers on Molokai were without cable services for about 30 hours last week starting Wednesday evening. The outage was caused by a water leak in the east end building that houses Oceanic’s equipment, according to Norman Santos, vice president of engineering for Oceanic.

The company uses microwave signals to send cable and Internet signals from Lahaina, Maui to Molokai. A small building in east Molokai serves as the hub to receive those transmission signals. Santos said water started dripping into the building last Wednesday evening, March 9, and shorted out the two receivers for video signal. The third receiver for Internet remained operational, and Oceanic Internet did not fail during that time, according to Santos.…

As seven Molokai High School sports teams gear up for the spring season — some with competition already under their belt — we complete a look at what’s in store for the teams in the months ahead.

Boys Volleyball

The Molokai Boys Volleyball team is experienced this year with 12 returnees and six seniors on the team. Head Coach Hale Domingo said he is excited and has high hopes for this year’s team.

“I have heavy upperclassmen with this team, so I’m very lucky to have such an older team where they can control the practices as we’re trying to get everybody involved,” he said.…

Tennis Earns Team Victories

The Molokai High School Girls Tennis team earned its first team victory of the season by defeating St. Anthony 4-1 in a Maui Interscholastic League girls tennis match Saturday at the War Memorial courts in Wailuku. In the boys match, the Farmers also won 4-1, improving to 2-0.

On Friday in the girls singles division, Paula Maroto won her match, while Michelle McGuire and Althea Cariaga won their doubles match. On the boys’ side on Friday, Shyloh Kawaauhau-Puaa and Christian Ragonton each earned a singles win, and Kaiea Dowling and Preston Pascua-Kahookano, and Noeau Likua and Dathan Bicoy won their doubles matches.…

35 Years of Agriculture

A recent Hawaii Dept. of Agriculture (DOA) land use study shows dramatic changes in agriculture land use in the last 35 years, both on Molokai and statewide. Most of Molokai’s agriculture is in the Ho`olehua area, on DHHL, state and Molokai Ranch land. According to the DOA report, the largest ag land users in 2015 — farming about 2,300 acres — are seed companies that primarily lease from Molokai Ranch. Prior to 1980, many Ho`olehua homesteaders leased their land for pineapple production, while some of that land today is being used to grow diversified crops like sweet potatoes, dryland taro, vegetables, macadamia nuts, bananas and papayas, according to the study.…

Manley Wins State Wrestling Title

Manley Wins State Wrestling Title

Molokai wrestler Cendall Manley claimed the island’s sixth ever state championship in the sport last weekend on Oahu. She was one of 10 Molokai High wrestlers representing at the event, and one of eight to medal. The girls team finished seventh in the state out of 42 teams.

“I was speechless when I actually won and feel so blessed that God gave me favor,” said Cendall. “I am so honored that I got to represent Molokai in this way!”

Five wrestlers qualified on the girl’s side and all five Lady Farmers got a medal. Cendall Manley was State Champion in the 168 weight class, Alexandria Simon was third at 138 pounds, Esther Torres Umi was fourth at 145, Kelsie Lee Bicoy Juario was sixth at 132 and Martika English was sixth at 184.…

New Football Scoreboard Fundraiser

FMHMSF News Release

 

The Friends of Molokai High and Middle Schools Foundation (FMHMSF) would like to get our newly crowned MIL Champions Farmer Football team a new scoreboard. Total cost for this scoreboard is about $13,000 with shipping included. With installation and other incidental costs, the total cost to complete this project would be closer to $15,000.

Although it would have been nice to just pay for, then donate a scoreboard to our Athletic Department, the Friends Foundation is not in a financial position to do so, at least not for the entire amount. So Molokai, the foundation needs your help

According to Ron Kimball, FMHMSF treasurer, getting a new scoreboard for the football team had been a priority for new Athletic Director Lee DeRouin.…
