Arts Center Still Open

Did you know that the Molokai Arts Center (MAC) re-opened on June 1 after having been shut down since March 20? The MAC opened by appointment only with health and safety guidelines in place. Aka’ula School and Kualapu’u School held summer sessions and our Saturday Keiki Classes started up again. While the MAC studio is limited by space (hence “open by appointment only”), members have been able to continue creating beautiful ceramic pieces and paintings.

Thirty-one pieces were submitted for MAC’s ninth annual Member Art Show. Artist Maya Lea Portner was this year’s juror, and she virtually selected 22 pieces for this year’s show.…

Henry William Kawailani Kanawaliwali

On Sept. 11, 2020 our Lord decided it was time for Henry William Kawailani Kanawaliwali to return to him. Henry is survived by his wife Velma Momilani Kanawaliwali; his children, Henry N Kanawaliwali, Erin M Bentley, Lawrence K Kanawaliwali, and Kayla H K Urban; 10 grandchildren, Gaela Joi, JanVier, Eli, Jasmine, William, Jahsiah, Kaohele, Alyah, Kalapana and Maile; three sisters Helen O’Connor, Joyce Dillon and Eden Castillo; one brother, Newton Kanawaliwali; and many nieces and nephews.

Henry was raised in Ho’olehua, Molokai. Growing up he learned farming, fishing (diving) and hunting. Raised down in Mo’omomi, his favorite place on Molokai, he became a great fisherman/diver.…

Hawaii’s State Constitutional Convention of 1978 was the lavatory of deceit in the undermining of “native Hawaiian as amended” self-determination, while at the same time our kupuna were used and are still being used in justifying our political okoles self created OHA scam.

After more than 42 years, including numerous lawsuits by the recognized beneficiaries, our created hewa, parades “Native Hawaiians.” The OHA scam is now open for all the people of this crooked state, with the granted privilege of participation, “self-determination” in “native Hawaiian” affairs.…

Just past mile marker 4.5, at the entrance to Kawela Plantation II, you will find Molokai’s first Little Free Library. A global phenomenon, the small, front-yard book exchanges number more than 100,000 around the world in over 100 countries. Now, with the support of the Kawela Plantation Homeowners Association, Molokai’s new Little Free Library will join the movement to share books, bring people together and create communities of readers.

Child and Family Service (CFS) hosted the Festival of Hope for Families, a walk-up event offering local individuals and families support resources, services, and food gift certificates from Oct. 12-16. Part of a series of statewide events, Molokai’s Festival of Hope for Families helped provide needed supplies, resources, and family-friendly activities to those in need during the pandemic crisis.

This family-focused festival followed social distancing guidelines and required that all attendees follow safety guidelines when walking up to the Child and Family Service Molokai Office where groceries, food gift certificates, Community Resource Kits, PPE items and advice, and education resources were distributed.…

There’s less than a week left to vote in the General Election— and if you’ve missed the deadline to mail in your ballot, or haven’t even registered yet and still want to make your vote count, it’s not too late. Molokai’s Voter Service Center is open at Mitchell Pauole Center Conference Room.

It will remain open through Election Day on Nov. 3. Hours of operation for the Voter Service Center are now through Nov. 2, Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Tuesday, Nov. 3 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Ballots must be turned in to election officials by 7 p.m.…

$1M in Small Business Mortgage and Rent Relief

Mayor Michael Victorino announced Wednesday the launch of a $1 million Small Business Mortgage and Relief direct payment program to provide a lifeline for businesses struggling to survive COVID-19 impacts. The County of Maui is partnering with the Maui Chamber of Commerce, which is administering the mortgage and rent relief program.

“Commercial rent and mortgage relief is a top priority for most businesses,” Mayor Victorino said. “This CARES Act funding provides a lifeline to help businesses survive the COVID-19 pandemic and recession. Workshop for Renewable Energy Cooperative

On Saturday, Oct. 24, from 9 to 11 a.m., Shake Energy will host another virtual public meeting to further our progress on designing renewable energy projects on Molokai to be locally owned and operated. This follows in a series of community workshops hosted on Molokai about Community-Based Renewable Energy (CBRE). These meetings are held regularly every two weeks to continue the effort to formalize this energy cooperative and design the projects it will own and operate.
