11th Annual Keiki Fishing Tournament

It appears the fish had no chance at Maurice Point last Saturday. With about 160 young fishermen — some skilled, some beginners — competing for prizes at a children’s fishing tournament, hundreds of fish were hooked over the weekend. Most, however, were returned to the ocean.
“It’s a catch and release (tournament),” said Robert Kalawe Jr., founder and organizer of the Annual Keiki Fishing Tournament. He added it is important to teach catch-and-release to children because it teaches them conservation at a young age, and also how to give back to the ocean.
Armed with bamboo poles distributed by the organization, every child had the same chance of catching the biggest fish when the 11th edition of the free tournament kicked off July 12 at 10 a.m.…

2025 Molokai Youth Basketball Leagues

Registration for the 2025 Molokai Youth Basketball leagues have already started July 1. 

All keiki ages 8 and 9, 10 and 11 are welcome to register. Registration is free, and will last until July 31.

The Kaunakakai Gymnasium will be the venue for the youth basketball leagues. The season goes from Aug. 4 to Oct. 2.

HUD Awards $22.3 Million Housing Grant to DHHL

The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL) announced Friday it has secured a substantial $22.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) under the Native Hawaiian Housing Block Grant (NHHBG). 

Established under the Native American Housing Assistance and Self Determination Act (NAHASDA), the NHHBG exclusively provides funding to DHHL to address the unique housing challenges faced by Native Hawaiians by offering affordable housing options for low-income Native Hawaiian families.

“The ongoing allocation of these federal funds allows us to continue offering affordable housing options that ensure our beneficiaries’ success and stability for generations to come,” said DHHL Director Kali Watson.…

Randall Joseph Houk

Randall Joseph Houk, 73, a man of unique character and a generous heart, passed away peacefully at home on June 6, 2025.
In his hometown of Eagle, Wisconsin, he was an avid hunter of raccoon, coyote, bear and rabbits. He also enjoyed roasting chickens and pigs for family and friends’ outdoor parties. He was very proud of his 40 years of working as a machinist, his German heritage, and his family.
In his retirement home of Kaunakakai, Hawaii, he was known for opening the church windows before Saturday service at St. Damien’s Catholic Church and walking the sidewalks of Ranch Camp.…

James Boettner Kaleolani Bishaw

James Boettner Kaleolani Bishaw, age 82, of Ho‘olehua, Molokai, passed away on June 17, 2025, at Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu.
He was born on June 22, 1942, in Hoʻolehua to Christian Alexander Kaulakahinui Bishaw and Eunice Hi‘ileilanikalaponimoi Kamalo. James was known for his deep love for his ‘ohana, quiet strength, and lifelong connection to the land and people of Molokai.
He is survived by his wife, Mona Lynne Bishaw; daughters Jeannie Bishaw-Hamakua (Kanui), Hannah Briones (Alejandro), Sherry Yagin (Bobo), Barbara Rapanot (Noland), Raquel Pacheco (Richard), and Tiana Green (Travis); as well as many grandchildren, great- grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
At his request, no services will be held.…

Kids Learn While Restoring Hawaiian Fishponds

Armed with aloha and good intentions, a group of children removed thousands of pounds of invasive species plus some debris from a loko i‘a, or Hawaiian fishpond, on Molokai’s south shore last week. 

“Yesterday, they removed invasive species, gorilla ogo, because we have a lot of gorilla ogo on the south shore of Molokai. And then today, we were just taking all the fence that was located by the second makaha (wooden gate),” said Tiani Cook, executive director of the nonprofit organization Ka Honua Momona.

About 15 children enrolled on Maui Economic Development’s summer program worked at the Kaloko‘eli fishpond in Kamiloloa last week.…

The Healing Power of Horses

A nonprofit organization based on Molokai is saying they have delivered positive results after a few months of offering free equine-assisted therapy sessions to families and individuals on the island.
“We have noticed a huge benefit, we are watching folks progress throughout their time with us,” Ho‘aka Mana executive director Kanoe Davis said.
The Pili Na Lio equine therapy program started in February, in collaboration with Maui’s Spirit Horse Ranch. The program is grant-funded until the end of the year, but Davis said it is working so well, that Ho‘aka Mana is hoping to extend it until the end of 2026.…

Bargain Hunting for a Good Cause

The parking lot of the commercial building across the highway from Kaunakakai Baptist Church was busy Saturday morning, even though none of the businesses were open. It was full of shoppers looking for a bargain — and more importantly, to support Molokai’s only hospice.
“Hospice Maui-Molokai puts on the annual yard sale. People donate items from all over the community; and we have quality items. We are well known, so people look forward to the sale,” said Barbara Helm, bereavement coordinator and grief counselor at the hospice.
There were shoes for only a buck, furniture, toys, board games, cooking utensils, dishes, small appliances, bedding, jewelry, baby strollers, holiday decorations, plants, musical instruments, luggage, artwork and clothes, lots of clothes.…
