County Bill Bans Non-Mineral Sunscreens

The sale, distribution and use of non-mineral sunscreens could soon be prohibited on Molokai, Maui and Lanai as part of Bill 135, which was recently passed unanimously by the Maui County Council. 

Introduced by County Councilmember Kelly Takaya King, chair of the Council’s Climate Action, Resilience, and Environment Committee, Bill 135 recognizes that many non-mineral sunscreens have been shown to pose a direct threat to the health of coastal waters, coral reefs and other marine species.

Non-mineral sunscreens include chemical sunscreens such as oxybenzone, octinoxate and octocrylene. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are known as “mineral sunscreens,” and of the 16 active ingredients currently used as UV filters in sunscreen products, only zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are generally recognized as safe and effective by the Food and Drug Administration. …

Molokai Baha’í Community Observes 100th Anniversary

The Molokai Baha’í community will join members of the Baha’í Faith throughout Hawaii and around the world on Nov. 28 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the passing of ‘Abdu’l-Baha on that date in 1921.  

Throughout the East and the West, ‘Abdu’l-Baha acquired the reputation of an ambassador of peace and a champion of justice. He became the head of the Baha’i Faith following the passing of its Prophet-Founder, his father, Baha’u’llah, in 1892. 

From 1910-1913, despite ill health, ‘Abdu’l-Baha travelled to Egypt, North America and Europe, where he proclaimed the essential principles of the Baha’í Faith, such as the equality of women and men, universal peace, removal of all forms of prejudice, the harmony of science and religion, and a spiritual solution to economic problems.…

Dr. Moriba Jah does not look like the typical scientist because he has dreads, earrings and tattoos. Jah was born in San Francisco, California in 1971, March 23. At the age of two years, he moved to Venezuela. At the age of six, Jah studied at the Cap(f) Pedro Ma, Ochoa Morales National Guard military high school in Venezuela. Hawaiian Electric Goal: 70% Carbon Reduction by 2030

Stressing the urgency of the global effort to slow climate change, Hawaiian Electric has set a goal to cut carbon emissions from power generation 70 percent by 2030. 

Cutting emissions from power generation by 70 percent, compared with 2005 levels, would provide a significant portion of the reduction the entire Hawaii economy needs to meet the U.S. target of cutting carbon emissions by at least 50 percent economy wide by 2030. The reduction includes generation owned by Hawaiian Electric and independent power producers who sell electricity to the utility. 

Hawaiian Electric has also committed to achieving net zero or net negative carbon emissions from power generation by 2045 or sooner, meaning that if there are any emissions, they will be captured or offset. …

Gianina Reid Search Continues

Aloha kakou! Mahalo to the Molokai community and those who came out to search for Gianina Reid, who has been missing since June, on Labor Day weekend. We have not stopped looking for her, although we have had many setbacks and challenges along the way. 

I have been spearheading this search and rescue on Molokai since August. I can’t begin to tell you how amazing our Molokai community has been throughout this process! It has been a bittersweet journey but one in which we all feel the emotions of this situation.

Our continued search for Gianina in Kalae will be happening on Thanksgiving Day.…

A Mother’s Thoughts

Gianina Reid went missing on Molokai in June. The below was a message that was texted to me by her mom, Lenia Rexrode, on Gianina’s birthday, Oct 26. I asked permission to share it with our community, especially at this time of Thanksgiving. May we all remember who and what is so very dear to our hearts and to forever cherish the love we have for each other.

“Another birthday has gone by, far too short a life. But an impactful one. We each leave our mark on this earth in some way. My heart is thankful to you all, deeply because you’ve all been soldiers looking for her.…

Molokai Football Gets Historic Win

The Molokai Farmers Football team traveled to Maui last Friday for a controlled scrimmage with the Na Ali’i of King Kekaulike High School. Head Coach Mike Kahale and his staff and players made history by winning 22-8 and got their first 11-man football victory in the school’s history. Molokai won the Maui Interscholastic League’s eight-man championship title for five straight years before having no league football for the past two years because of the pandemic.

The MIL eight-man season was set to move forward this year but after Hana and Lani football teams cancelled their teams this season due to COVID restrictions, Kahale secured this one and only game and road trip for his team.…

This work of art, crafted by Molokai artist Misty Mollena, is titled “Mock Chicken” and created from chicken feathers and cotton fabric. It won Best in Show during the Molokai Art Center’s annual Member Show, earning Mollena a $300 prize. Show juror Kat Kazlauskas praised the piece for its “incredible attention to detail in its execution as well as an innovative approach to cultural references.” To read more about this piece and other award-winning entries in the Member Show, click here.

MAC Art Show Winners

Kudos to all the Molokai artists who entered the 10th annual Molokai Arts Center (MAC) Member Show. Due to gathering restrictions, awards were announced via Zoom. The Member Show is online and can be found on the MAC website molokaiartscenter.org/2021-member-show/.

While all the art work was exceptional, not all submissions were juried in. Our juror, artist Kat Kazlauskas, graciously shared thoughts about each piece juried in on the MAC blog molokaiartscenter.org/2021/10/03/some-notes-from-our-juror-kat-kazlauskas/. Read her notes alongside the photos. Some of the works are offered for sale where a price is listed.
