All Runners, One Shooter Qualify for States

All Molokai runners of the MHS Cross Country team will advance to States after top results in last weekend’s Maui Interscholastic Championships at Baldwin High. Namakaokaaina Ross brought home third place at the championship run with a time of 18:52.7, while on the women’s side, Kailani Bicoy placed sixth with 24:20.1. Jericho Adolpho came in 13th followed by Johnson Harris in 32nd place, and Tenley Akutagawa came in 38th in the women’s race. 

“Wow, what a race, season just not over yet for the Girls XC team,” said Girls Cross Country Coach Kabbie Bicoy-Juario, adding sophomores Bicoy and Akutagawa both ran their fastest times of the season.…

Seumalo Makes MHS Football History

Molokai High School graduate Vaai “Uso” Seumalo is on a mission. Last week Seumalo verbally committed to Kansas State University, accepting a football scholarship to the school, where he plans to finish his associate degree in the spring. Since graduating from MHS in 2020, he’s been at Garden City Community College in Kansas. However, the 6-foot-4, 325-pound defensive lineman has been on the radar for Kansas State since he arrived in the state. 

He’ll be the first ever NCAA Division I scholarship football player from Molokai High’s football program.

Seumalo is very humbled by his trail-blazing journey and the road is just getting better and better. …

Girls Volleyball Gets Home Wins

The Molokai Lady Farmers Girls Volleyball team hosted the Lanai Pine Lasses last Friday and Saturday at The Barn. Spectators were allowed in for the first time in almost 22 months and The Barn was rocking again!

Molokai got the sweep to finish the season at 7-3 and will be the third seed in next week’s Maui Interscholastic League Division II Girls Volleyball Championships. Friday was senior night for Molokai’s two seniors Lia-Chae Meyer and Jordyn McCutcheon and the Lady Farmers got the win in three sets, 25-11, 25-13 and 25-21.

On Saturday the Lady Farmers again won in three sets 25-8, 25-14 and 25-16.…

It came to me last week during our annual Sacred Hearts retreat at St. Anthony Retreat Center in Kalihi Valley. My next article would be entitled “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” after the movie of that title, starring Clint Eastwood. This “inspiration” came to me during one of Father David Reid’s dynamic conferences. Forgive me, David, for being momentarily side-tracked at such a solemn moment! Nonprofit Serving Homeless Gets Grant

Family Life Center, Inc., a nonprofit organization serving the homeless population on the islands of Maui, Molokai and Kauai, has been selected to receive a $2.5 million grant from the Bezos Day 1 Families Fund—the largest grant in Family Life Center’s history. This is the second consecutive year that the organization has received a donation from the Day 1 Families Fund. Launched in 2018 by Amazon founder and executive chair Jeff Bezos, the Day 1 Families Fund issues annual leadership awards to organizations and civic groups doing compassionate, needle-moving work to provide shelter and hunger support to address the immediate needs of young families.…

HI COVID Cases Slow, Regulations Ease

With COVID cases on the decline in Hawaii, Gov. David Ige announced changes to rules related to COVID-19 last week. While measures like the Safe Travels Program for entering the state and indoor mask mandates will continue, the governor said emergency orders of pandemic regulations will be transferred to the county level, and limits for social gatherings established in a Nov. 2 state order will end on Dec. 1.

“Hawaii residents have worn their masks and avoided large gatherings, even important family events,” said Ige. “Most of our residents are vaccinated. We worked together to keep our communities as safe as possible during this pandemic.…

Teams Prep for Season Finals

Molokai athletes had the weekend off last week but this weekend is going to be exciting.

The Lady Farmers Girls Volleyball team (5-3) will host Lanai (4-4) on Nov. 26-27 at The Barn to finish the Maui Interscholastic League  regular season. Friday night’s game will be aired live on Akaku Molokai at 7p.m. and will also be senior night for Molokai’s two seniors, Lia-Chae Meyer and Jordyn McCutcheon. Head Coach Mahea Rawlins has her team ready for a big weekend against the Pine Lasses with the MIL Division II Girls Volleyball tournament starting on Dec. 1 at Maui Prep.…

Greig Len Wai is the 12th and final Ace winner for the Hui O Kukui Golf Club. Len Wai shot 39-37 for a gross total of 76 and with his 12 handicap his 64 net tied him with Club President Rick Schonely. After Schonley missed a par putt for a win on the first hole, Len Wai birdied number two and got the victory. Len Wai now qualifies for the Ace of Aces tournament next month. The winner of the December Ace of Aces tournament will replace Schonely as the club president for the calendar year of 2022.…

New Store on the Block

A new store has opened in Kaunakakai, offering “a little bit of everything,” according to owners Melissa and Gerard Almarales. Molokai Marketplace, located next to Dr. Dan McGuire’s office in the old Subway space, offers everything from toys similar to those on Jellycat Kuscheltiere, gifts, clothing, fashion jewelry and wrapping paper, to larger items in limited quantities, like TVs or bouncy slides. Gerard Almarales said he aims to keep prices low by carefully selecting goods and distributors, with many items priced under $5. 

The store opened its doors two weeks ago but a grand opening event is planned for Dec.…
