Hawaiian Electric to Issue $2M in Kokua Fund

Hawaiian Electric will apply $2 million in bill credits for customers who have struggled to pay their electric bill during the COVID-19 pandemic on Molokai and other islands. The Kokua Fund Bill Credit Program will automatically provide a one-time credit of $90 to past-due balances for about 22,000 residential and business customers by Jan. 31. 

“Our priority during the pandemic has been to keep customers connected,” said Hawaiian Electric President and CEO Shelee Kimura. “Many people have been affected by the pandemic and we have designed this program to reach as many as we can, especially those for whom this credit will be the most meaningful.…

More Internet Options for Homesteaders

Hawaiian homesteaders on Molokai will soon have more options for internet and telecommunications services. Recent Federal law, coupled with expanded service options, will now allow service users on the homelands to obtain telecommunications services from a provider of their choice under the lifting of a former exclusivity clause that allowed only one provider to issue telecommunication products. 

For many years, Sandwich Isle Communications, Inc. (SIC) was the exclusive provider of broadband telecommunications services under Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL) License No. 372 (License 372) which was issued to SIC’s parent company, Waimana Enterprises, Inc. on May 9, 1995. …

Civic Leadership Program Launches

Pacific Resource Partnership News Release

The Pacific Resource Partnership (PRP) launched “Partners for Democracy,” a 15-week non-partisan civic leadership program for emerging leaders who want to harness their passion for political advocacy to bring about change in Hawaii. The inaugural cohort consists of 30 civic-minded local leaders who are interested in running for elected office or becoming advocates for economic, community and social issues, including one from Molokai. On a live Zoom presentation Jan. 27, the program officially kicked off with a keynote by nationally acclaimed author and political strategist Christine Pelosi. 

The program’s curriculum is intended to empower leaders with training tools, resources, and support to help them build a solid foundation that will enable them to address the key issues facing Hawaii.…

Na Heona Molokai (Artists of Molokai) is a group creating an exhibition titled “No Stop Light: Molokai” for the 3,600 square foot Downtown Art Center in Honolulu, in May 2022. In the coming months, we will introduce each artist.  

PF Bentley grew up in Waikiki in the 60s and 70s and first came to Molokai in 1971 while a student at UH Manoa.  He graduated UH in 1975 with a B.Ed degree while working his first photography job at Sunbums Hawaii shooting music concerts for the publication.  In 1976, Bentley moved to San Francisco and later to New York for photojournalism opportunities, eventually returning home to Hawaii. …

What is your name and connection to Molokai?

My name Is U’i Kahue-Cabanting. My ohana is now five generations DHHL beneficiaries in Ho’olehua.  I am a cultural practitioner/kumu, community activist and political candidate. 

Describe your art.  

‘Ulana Niu is the art of weaving with coconut.  Most people equate ‘Ulana Niu with woven bowls or a hat and not much else, as it is considered a novelty or a souvenir, even a lost art. …

Two Molokai runners were named among the The Maui News MIL Boys and Girls Cross Country All-Stars. Molokai’s Namaka Ross and Kailani Bicoy made the cut to the All-Stars list, which is comprised of the top 10 finishers for the boys and girls Maui Interscholastic League Championship races. Ross is a senior and Bicoy is a junior at MHS, where they competed in the 2021 cross country season.…

Kind Rescue

We would like to thank the young man who rescued our dog who was walking on the highway in Kamalo on the night of January 22nd.  He so kindly picked her up and kept her safe for the night and somehow managed to find out where she lived and returned her safely the next morning.  We were so very happy to have her back we failed to get his name and thank him properly.  He has our heartfelt appreciation.

Cases Continue to Rise, Majority Have Mild Symptoms

Molokai had a new single-day high COVID count record of 42 cases last week on Jan. 18. The island had 184 new cases last week alone between Friday, Jan. 14 and Friday, Jan. 21, according to Dept. of Health data last Sunday. Recent cases on island haven’t caused much increase in emergency room visits, however, according to Molokai General Hospital. 

“We have not had a significant uptick in people visiting the Emergency Dept. with COVID symptoms, thank goodness, and those we have seen, have not had symptoms serious enough to ship out,” said Janice Kalanihuia, president of Molokai General Hospital, on Friday.…

Wins for Girls Basketball

The Molokai High Girls Basketball team got their season off to a strong start with two wins in Hana last weekend. Friday’s score was 47-14, and Saturday’s was 42-16, with high scorers including Lia-Chey Meyer, Leila Hooper-Phifer, Sally Andallo-Merkel, Kailana McGuire-Guerrero, Kaia Yamashita and Kaualea Helm. 

“Overall a great weekend of competition against Hana,” said first year Head Coach Kaimana Kahale. “Girls finally had an opportunity to play amidst this tough and challenging season so that was the biggest positive. Coaching wise we can establish a good foundation and had a chance to see what else we need to improve on.…
