Youth Cadet Leadership Program

It was with great pleasure and a privilege to meet the 12 cadets of this newly developed summer program: the first of its kind on Molokai and in the state of Hawaii. Kudos to Officers Lani Caparida (originator) and Kauanoe Mossman.

The 12 high school cadets were made up of five young women and seven young men between the ages of 14 to 18 who were selected through an application process. The three-week summer program consisted of a well-designed curriculum exposing these young cadets to a para-military style training focusing on law enforcement and first responder professions. When asked what the highlight of their three-week experience, the cadets replied: giving back via community services, inspired me to be a police officer, different types of professions like being a lawyer or a park ranger, the fitness training, exposure to the fire fighters training, being CPR certified.…

Rosita Carrancho Casino

Surrounded by family, Rosita Carrancho Casino, 95, of Kaunakakai passed away peacefully on Monday, June 20, 2022. 

Born in Santa Maria Ilocos Sur, Philippines to Aniceto Carrancho and Leoncia Dasalla in April 23, 1927, Rosita was one of seven siblings. She is survived by her brothers Abe (Cely), Felix (Antonia), Pedro Jr. (Linda) and sisters, Paula (Victor) and Rica (Joe). Preceding her to heaven are her older brothers Aurelio (Flora) and Joe (Rosario). 

Rosita married Romulo Casino, Sr. (deceased) on May 1, 1944. Touchdown! Molokai youth interested in football have an amazing opportunity to up their game next week. The second Football Skills Camp, brought to the island by Molokai High alum Ry Akana and his Washington State-based company Akana Athletics, is bringing a lineup of top coaches and athletes to kickstart skills and excitement for the sport.

Molokai Gains a New Doctor

“’Doctor’ was never in my life plan,” said Dr. Randi Olds, MD, who has moved to Molokai from Kauai to serve the island’s rural community at the Molokai General Hospital Outpatient Clinic. 

Her ‘life plan’ changed, however, when she attended community college in Las Vegas after graduating from Kamehameha Schools, initially majoring in business. 

“I always liked chemistry,” she said. “My organic chemistry teacher mentored me and asked me if I ever thought about going into medicine. ‘Like a nurse?’” she asked. “’No, a doctor,’” he told her. “It was the first time I ever thought about it.”…

COVID Slowly on the Decline

COVID trends are back on the decline statewide after sharp increases in May and early June. 

Daily average cases statewide are hovering at just below 1000, with an 18.9 percent positivity rate over the last week as of last Wednesday. That’s down from a daily average of more than 1200 at the end of May. 

On Molokai, the week between Wednesday, June 8 and Wednesday, June 15 brought 10 new cases, with 23 positive cases the previous week. Officials suggest multiplying the number of officially reported cases by a factor of five or six to account for home tests, which are not reported to the Dept.…

Newly Graduated MD from Molokai

UH JABSOM News Release 

The University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine (UH JABSOM) recently graduated 69 doctors including many minorities as well as those from rural communities on the neighbor islands. The new crop of physicians include 16 that identify as being of Filipinx or mixed Filipinx descent, four Native Hawaiians and 10 with neighbor island roots. One is from Molokai. 

Six out of the 16 physicians of Filipinx descent participated in the UH Manoa Filgrad Ceremony, a celebration of Filipinx students’ heritage, identity and community. Four Native Hawaiian kauka ʻopio (young physicians) were honored in the Annual Kihei Ceremony sponsored by the ʻAhahui o na Kauka and JABSOM Native Hawaiian Center of Excellence.…

Injured and alive deer – Deer that have been injured, for example, by vehicle strikes and are still alive pose a threat to public safety. If a live injured deer is encountered, do not approach the animal. Immediately call:

Celebrating Molokai Drug Court Successes

In observance of National Drug Court Month 2022, the Second Circuit’s Drug Court programs held graduation events on Maui and Molokai.

The seven members of Maui Drug Court’s 78th graduating class celebrated completion of the intensive program when Judge Kelsey T. Kawano closed their cases on May 19.
