Sage Heart Workshop Series
UH-CTAHR Molokai Cooperative Extension News Release
Herbs and spices play an important role in history, culture, cooking, beverages, flavorings, and medicine. By definition, an herb or spice is a plant derived substance used in food or beverage preparation for seasoning, coloration, preservation, or medicine. Although herbs and spices have similar uses, there is a distinct difference between them.
Herbs are considered temperate, herbaceous, and are derived from leaves of a plant. Spices are considered tropical, from woody plants, and are made from the roots, bark, fruit, seeds, or parts of the plant other than the leaves.
Herbs can be a healthy alternative to salt in adding flavor and aroma when cooking meals or preparing beverages. Herbs also contain healthy antioxidants.
Join UH-CTAHR Molokai Cooperative Extension and Molokai Rural Health Community Association for two Sage Heart workshops focusing on growing kitchen herbs and taste testing several dishes using each herb! This free four-hour workshop series includes all supplies needed for the hands-on learning activities.
Registration is required by Monday, Feb. 10 at noon as space is limited. The program is open to all ages, however, preference will be given to kupuna. To register, call Kuulei Arce at 808-774-8991. For questions about the program or for more information contact Jennifer Hawkins at jhawk@hawaii.edu.
On Molokai, we are offering two workshop locations to choose from. The central Molokai workshop series will be held on Feb. 12 and March 12 from 9 to 11 a.m. on both days.
We are excited to also be offering an east Molokai workshop series as well. The east Molokai workshops will be held on Feb. 12 and March 12 from 2 to 4 p.m.
When registering, be sure to state if you are registering for the central Molokai workshops or the east Molokai workshops. The location for each workshop will be provided at the time of registration.
The Sage Heart program is made possible by funding provided by the Maui County Department of Agriculture. A special thanks also goes out to Hikiola Cooperative for their donation of supplies.
