HCSU MOLOKAI FIELD ASSISTANT – ID# 10235. 

Hawaii Cooperative Studies Unit.  Regular, Part-Time (25-35% FTE), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Islands Science Center’s Kilauea Field Station, Hawaii Cooperative Studies Unit (HCSU), located on Moloka’i, Hawaii.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, and availability of funds.  MINIMUM HOURLY RATE:  $8.53-$13.24/Hr.  DUTIES:  Assists Project Leaders in studies to measure the erosion and runoff in the Kawela watershed, monitor plant and animal communities, and provides assistance to periodic studies of water flow and sediment movement on the reef.  This project is designed to understand how biologic disturbances from invasive plants and animals have changed the movement of water and sediment through the watershed and the effect of these changes on coastal water quality and coral reef health.  Data from electric recorders must be periodically transferred to laptop computers, carefully documented and backed up, and then transmitted to scientists in Hawaii and California.  Field instruments must be kept clean, calibrated, and in good working order.  Periodic surveys of plants and animals (goats) in the watershed will be carried out.  PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:  EDUCATION:  High School Diploma.  EXPERIENCE:  Up to one (1) year of experience (paid or well-documented volunteer) conducting geological, hydrological, or ecological field research.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Knowledge of basic principles of Hawaiian geology, hydrology, and ecology.  Knowledge of computer data transfer and management, entry on spreadsheets, and file management principles.  Ability to work with field instrumentation and electronic data loggers.  Able to perform data management and summary, coordinate field logistics and independently carry out data collection.  Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle on rugged, unpaved roads.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Able to hike with forty (40) pound backpack.  Able to work in a range of physical environments, including heavily vegetated rain forest, hot steep and rugged gulches, and the reef flat and coastal waters.  Able to drive safely on rugged, unpaved roads.  SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Physical or Natural Science.  Knowledge of Hawaiian ecosystems and natural history.  Some coral reef experience.  INQUIRIES:  JoAnne Riveira 933-0706 (Hawaii).  APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:  The preferred method of applying for a job is through our on-line application process.  Please go to www.rcuh.com, click on “Employment” and navigate to “Job Announcements/Apply for a Job.” However, if you do not have access to the Internet, you may apply by submitting resume; cover letter including Recruitment ID#, referral source, narrative of your qualifications for position and salary history; names, phone numbers and addresses of three supervisory references and copy of degree(s)/transcripts/certificate(s) to qualify for position by fax (808) 956-5022, mail, or hand-deliver to: Director of Human Resources, Research Corporation of the University of Hawaii, 2530 Dole Street, Sakamaki Hall D-100, Honolulu, HI 96822 before the closing date.  If you have questions on the application process and/or need assistance, please call (808)956-3100.  CLOSING DATE: June 1, 2010.  EEO/AA Employer.
