Possible Lease Of Private Lands For Hunting
DLNR HOLDS MOLOKA‘I MEETING
HONOLULU — The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) invites the public to an information meeting on Moloka‘i on Thursday, February 21, to discuss possible cooperative lease agreements between DLNR and any interested Moloka‘i landowners that will allow public hunting on their lands.
The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at Mitchell Pau‘ole Center in Kaunakakai.
“We welcome community input on possible cooperative management or lease agreements which could provide additional public hunting areas on Moloka‘i,” said Laura H. Thielen, DLNR chairperson.
The minimum length of time for the lease or cooperative management agreement will be 10 years.
Game species presently found on Molokai include quail, francolins, turkeys, pheasants, two types of doves, Axis deer, pigs, and goats.
If there is community support for this action, DLNR plans to contact and hold preliminary meetings with interested landowners. A proposed lease or cooperative management agreement would be developed with input from the community. Any future lease or agreement would be subject to approval by the landowner and the Board of Land and Natural Resources.
For more information call the DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife at (808) 553-1745 on Moloka‘i or (808) 984-8100 on Maui.
