Molokai Farmers Market Returns

For several decades, the Molokai Farmers Market was a weekly fixture on Saturday mornings along the strip of Ala Malama Avenue across the street from the Molokai Public Library. The market, closed since the COVID-19 pandemic, reopened last week. 

“The Molokai Farmers Market is a place where the community can come if they have vegetables in their garden that they want to sell,” market manager Tylor Tanaka said. “It’s just a place where everyone can come and kind of convene and enjoy one another’s company, and kind of bring that life back into Kaunakakai.”

The market’s focus, he said, is to get farmers back in the market and put more locally grown produce on the table, but all vendors are welcomed, including food vendors and artisans, similar to the old farmers market that thrived for so many years.…

She was a surfer, an artist and a writer. She spoke four languages. She was a princess and the heir to the throne of the Hawaiian Kingdom, a nation stolen by the descendants of the people the Hawaiians had welcomed with their aloha.  

“The missionaries came here to us and taught us to look to Heaven for happiness, and while our eyes were on the skies they have taken our land from under our feet,” Princess Kaʻiulani said in an interview to The San Francisco Call newspaper Aug. 7, 1898.

Molokai Community Does Great Job in Wildfire Preparedness Efforts

Look what Molokai Communities accomplished in 2025 with technical and financial support from the Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization’s Firewise Communities Program, funded through a grant from the American Red Cross. 

Nāʻiwa removed one acre of dry brush and shrub to clear their main access roadway in case of evacuations. Twelve families assisted in removing over 20 cubic yards of flammable vegetation, consisting mostly of invasive haole koa. 

Kalamaʻula cleared over 200 cubic yards and contributed 100 hours of volunteer work to reduce the risk of wildfire for 124 homes, eight churches, seven businesses, and two preschools. 

Paniolo Hale maintained a fire apparatus road that doubles as a fire break and removed wildfire hazards.…

Established in 1952, the Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization committed to perpetuating the rich heritage of Hawaiian canoe racing.

OHCRA is the organizer of the Nā Wahine O Ke Kai and Molokai Hoe (Molokai to Oahu) canoe races across the Kaiwi Channel. Both events are regarded as among the most famous and most challenging outrigger canoe events in the world. Makaiwi Named MEO Employee of the Month for June

Molokai Driver Supervisor Esmeralda Amy Makaiwi, “a steady pillar of support” for the last 25 years, was named Maui Economic Opportunity Employee of the Month for June.

“Amy’s 25 years of dedicated service – and the positive impact she continues to make in our community, are a true testament to her character,” said Molokai Branch Manager Mahie McPherson, who nominated Makaiwi. 

She added Makaiwi’s respect for others is unwavering.

“Amy treats every person she encounters with dignity, patience and kindness. She fosters an environment where everyone feels seen, valued and included,” McPherson said.

Amy is an integral part of MEO’s Molokai transportation system, which is effectively the island’s mass transit service provided through a Maui County grant.…

MEO Head Start Preschool Remains Open

Maui Economic Opportunity’s Head Start preschool classrooms on Maui and Molokai are not currently impacted by the federal government shutdown and will remain open.

While some of our Head Start partners have had to close due to funding issues, MEO’s Head Start operates on a different program year, June 1, 2025, to May 31, 2026, explained MEO CEO Debbie Cabebe. This means that MEO Head Start is funded for the current school year.

“MEO would like our Head Start parents and the community to know that our preschool program remains open,” Cabebe said. “This is not the case for some communities across the nation, forcing families to scramble to secure childcare or to stay home from work.…

Help Available for Molokai Irrigation System Users

The Hawaii Department of Agriculture and Biosecurity (DAB) is hosting an in-person event to assist Molokai Irrigation System users filling out the Settlement Agreement and Irrigation Water Application that were mailed and delivered to your property.
