Hauoli La Hanau e Keli`i… and Many More!

Tuesday, March 6th, 2007

Many smiling faces from all over the island surrounded Keli`i Mawae as he celebrated his annual 71st birthday. When asked how old their unofficial Mayor is, well wishers from all over the island gave a collective shrug and took careful note that the party was set for the same time next year.

Through his music, the party celebrated an inspirational leader of diverse talents: farmer, fisherman, hunter and teacher. The event was sponsored by Lonomusic and Monkeypod and a beautiful birthday cake was made by Kanemitsu Bakery, complete with palm trees, hula dancers and a slack key guitar design.

Uncle Keli`i partied in a jam session of traditional Hawaiian music, accompanied by close friends Norman De Costa and Lono. Soon after settling into some of Molokai’s favorite tunes, Keli`i spotted bass players Doug and Roger in the crowd and urged them to join the group. A sedate but blissful mood gripped the crowd, who were entertained by hula dancing from inspired guests Kim and Richard Markham , Hoku De Costa and Tiana Conley.

Lono, Keli`i’s friend of over 35 years, said that he had organized the party to honor someone whom he had always looked up to. Studying together as Farmers of Molokai High School, their friendship was cemented when Keli`i did not object to repeatedly losing his home-made lunches to Lono, who hated cafeteria food with a passion. Today, their friendship is bound by a simple love for Music and for Molokai.

Anyone who missed the celebration has not missed out on hearing more of Keli`i’s kiho'alu mastery. His CD “Out Mo`omomi Way,” was released in November and can be purchased through Molokai’s own record company: www.monkeypod.com.

Lono would like to thank the staff at Hotel Molokai, particularly Ramona Smith and General Manager Michael Drew, for all of their help.

Letter to the Editor: Not Just Hot Bread

Sunday, July 16th, 2006

What’s the common advice given to many visitors to Molokai? It’s raved about in numerous travel books, posted on websites and passed on excitedly through word of mouth: “Make sure you go get hot bread at Kanemitsu Bakery.” As I boarded the early morning flight from Oahu, I looked forward to experiencing this quintessential activity later on that evening. Instead, I was treated to so much more that I anticipated. My first visit to “the friendly isle” can seldom be read about in travel books and websites or pre-packaged in a tourist’s itinerary. To go to a place where development has not destroyed the beauty of this isle and where culture has not been mass commercialized, is to arrive in Molokai. After coffee and pastries I met up my friend Noelani Lee and the Ka Honua Momona team to take part in the community workday on the fishpond at Kalokoeli.

A Legacy of Love’s

By Catherine Cluett Pactol

Love’s Bakery has held a special place in Hawaii’s history for nearly 170 years as the business closes at the end of this month. Love’s legacy on Molokai began in the mid-1900s and the bakery’s closure also brings the end of an era for its Molokai employees and customers.

Details are scarce on the early employees of Love’s on Molokai — Francis Yuen and Sadao Otsuka, who have both passed away — but most sources agree Love’s began distributing on Molokai in the 1950s. More recently, Dickie Linkee, George Kahinu and Mike Kahinu drove the Love’s trucks.…

Molokai Highlighted at Product Festival

Last weekend, 16 Molokai businesses joined the county’s best crafters, artists, designers and food creators at the third annual Made in Maui County Festival in Kahului. With more than 10,000 attendees, the event offers local vendors a step up to market their products, secure wholesale deals and network with eager customers. Marked with green flags in a prime location at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, Molokai booths were an event attraction, led in popularity by Kanemitsu Bakery, which boasted a long line across the lawn.

Molokai Vendors Take Maui Trade Show by Storm

The owners of 12 Molokai businesses came home from Maui earlier this month with new customers, sales leads, county-wide fans and a great experience. They attended the first-ever Made in Maui County Festival, an event that showcased locally made products from more than 130 vendors at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center.

The positive response to the festival astounded everyone.

Jennifer Hawkins, small business advocate at Molokai’s Kuha`o Business Center, said about 8,000 attendees were anticipated at the event. Yet despite pouring rain throughout the day, more than 9,000 people came. Molokai vendors occupied their own area at the show, marked by green flags, and Hawkins said officials were “in awe” of their presentations and the effort that was put into transporting and showcasing the products.…

Mateo’s Mana`o

Danny Mateo’s time as Maui County council chair ended at noon Jan. 2. The next minute he started his work in the Mayor’s office as an executive assistant and liaison for the county and State legislature.

“Retirement for me is not in the immediate future,” he said over coffee at Kanemitsu Bakery Saturday. “I still have a lot to offer. As long as there is fire in the fireplace I will continue what I do.”

This means Mateo will continue to be a voice for the people of Molokai and work to improve the island, something he did for 10 years as a councilmember before he reached his term limit.  …
