MHS Culinary Club’s Journey

The Molokai High School’s Culinary Club is an extracurricular activity run by Tiare Hubbard. The club began in 2022 and has become a popular endeavor for students interested in exploring the culinary arts and gaining hands-on experiences.

Recently, the club went on a cooking exploration trip, known as Foodie Explorations 2023, on Oahu, Sept. 14-17. 11 club members went on the trip: Tiare Hubbard, Marcus Hubbard, Revelation Moreno Perreira, Chevy and Shazen Bush, Iokua Place, Auli‘i Ching, Aiko Kanemitsu, Leah Kadowaki, Mark , Maximus Sakamoto, and Jake Wataoka.

Big Strides for Football and Air Riflery

On Sept. 30, Molokai Football triumphed over Seabury Hall 40-14 in a comeback victory.   

The game kicked off with Seabury Hall taking an early lead in the first quarter. Elima Dagan sprinted 60 yards for a touchdown, but the extra point attempt failed. Molokai quickly responded, with Christian Nip scoring a 14-yard run, followed by a successful pass from Tonka Kalilikane to Kinohi Kaupu. 

The second quarter was all about Molokai’s relentless offense. Kahakoi Lopez caught a 9-yard pass from Kalilikane, widening their lead. Kalilikane further showcased his skills with two consecutive 4-yard and 2-yard runs, though the extra point attempts fell short. …

Howard Michael Ahina Jr.

Howard Michael Ahina Jr. passed away on June 24 at the age of 53. He was the oldest of three siblings born to the late Howard and Shareen Ahina. Howard grew up in Ho’olehua on Pu’ukapele Avenue. He attended Kamehameha Kapalana for three years before returning to Molokai High School where he graduated in 1987. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he proudly served his country for two years. 

On April 12,1991, Howard welcomed the birth of his daughter, Leilani. His second daughter, Hiilani, was born two years later, on March 30,1993. Howard excitedly welcomed the birth of his only son, Isaiah, on June 23, 2003.…

Woman in Critical Condition Following Bakery Explosion

Molokai’s Cisilia Defang remains in critical condition as of Sunday, following an accident at Kanemitsu Bakery last week that left 70 percent of her body covered in second and third degree burns. 

Thirty-one-year-old Defang was born deaf and worked at the bakery for more than two years. Kanemitsu Bakery told KHON2 she was one of their best bakers, and her family said she loved her job.

On the evening of July 4, she was working to prepare bread for the next day and turned on the gas stove around 8 p.m., according to the bakery. …

Molokai Robotics: A Legacy of Learning

Preparing for their regional competition on Oahu, Molokai High School robotics students spent their spring break practicing the delicate art of maneuvering blocks onto three levels using a robot they designed, built and programmed over the past several months. In the competition, they form alliances with teams from around the world, with a dozen other students and their robots all competing to perform the same tasks on a basketball-court-sized competition field. It’s a high-tech, high-pressure activity that costs thousands of dollars just to enter.

Soup R Bowl Thanks

The Molokai Arts Center held its 13th annual Soup ‘R Bowl on March 11.  Over 300 residents and visitors indulged in visual, culinary and performing arts. We are grateful for the many hands and hearts that graciously gave of their time and talent to make this event a success.  

Mahalo to our bowl makers who handcrafted over 450 soup bowls and mugs to choose from: Ames Chow, Ashley Ingram, Maricel Kanemitsu, Lil Macmillan, April Maddela, Judith Palmeri, Bianca West and Madison Zeller. Bowl makers Dan Bennett, Kim Markham, Emillia Noordhoek and Dawn Simpson also donated exquisite pieces for our art sale, along with Arabella Ark, Miliopuna Davis, Debbie Delatour, Allyson Durkin, Dewitt Jones, Cynthia Kalfas Cox, Barbie Levy, Joanne Pryor and Paula Scott.…

Soup ‘R Bowl Saturday

Hundreds of bowls filled the tables at Lanikeha Community Center last Saturday. Guests lined up out the door, tickets clenched, pondering the big decisions for the night: what will their new bowl look like, and what kind of soup will fill it? 

Now in its 13th year, the Soup ‘R Bowl is a soup themed fundraiser for the Molokai Arts Center (MAC) at which participants choose a type of soup and hand-made ceramic bowl to take home, amongst other artisanal gifts. The sold-out event featured a range of artwork from ceramics to music and dance performances. 

This year, attendees were able to choose between four types of soup: Portuguese bean soup, donated by the Kanemitsu family, chicken tinola, also donated by the Kanemitsu family, sea food chowder, donated by Mike Holm, and caldo verde, donated by Carol Rocha. …

John “Bobo” Nicholas Perez Ill

John “Bobo” Nicholas Perez III, 76, of Ho’olehua, Hawaii, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 11, 2022 in Kamuela, Hawaii. He was born on May 12, 1946. 

Bo was a restaurant manager at Don Ho’s Island Grill, Molokai Lodge Dining Room and worked at Kanemitsu’s Bakery and Coffee Shop. He was a talented musician performing with Bell and James, Dick Jensen and Molokai Jazz West. He was high school teacher and member of the Western Washington Painters Union. Bo is a proud graduate of Molokai High Class of 1964. 

Celebration of Life will be held on April 15, 2023, Ho’olehua Congregational Church Fellowship Pavillion, 2205 Lihipali Avenue, Molokai.…

There are only a few more days left to purchase tickets for the 2023 Molokai Arts Center (MAC) Soup ‘R Bowl. The 13th annual fundraiser event will be held at Lanikeha Community Center in Ho’olehua, on Saturday, March 11 from 5 to 8 p.m. 

What happens at the Soup ‘R Bowl? A ticket gains you entrance to tables lined with over 300 ceramic bowls (and a few Molokai mugs) handcrafted by artisans at the Molokai Arts Center. Redeem your ticket stubs for a bowl or mug of your choice as well as a hearty soup meal.
