M2O Brings Racers, Competition, Controversy

More than 200 athletes representing over 20 countries pushed off the sandy shores of Kepuhi Beach last Sunday to compete in the Molokai 2 Oahu (M2O) paddle board world championships. Competing on standup paddles, prone boards, hydrofoils and more, the athletes were joined by escort boats on their 32-mile journey across the notorious Ka’iwi Channel. As the last of the boats disappeared into the blue horizon, many Molokai residents were left with questions, concerns, and, in some cases, trash to contend with. 

The return of the 24th annual M2O after a three-year pandemic break caught many Molokai residents by surprise. …

The Molokai Holokai Ho’olaule’a is to be held on Molokai, July 14-15 and is a combination of some fun ocean paddling and land events.  

The event kicks off on July 14 with the Maui to Molokai Challenge, 27 miles from DT Fleming Beach Park, Maui, at 9 a.m. and the Gorilla Ogo and Mangrove Seed contest kicks off on the Molokai side at Kaunakakai Harbor, Molokai, with Sustainable Molokai. Finally, a late afternoon evening Skate Jam session will be held at the Molokai Community Health Center (MCHC) with local boy Alex Mawae.

Day two is full of action on Molokai, with the Ho’olaule’a bringing out the community and visiting paddlers to enjoy a day of festivities as we celebrate our youth.…

Last Friday, nearly 50 paddlers crossed the channel from Maui to Molokai on stand up paddle boards, one- and two-man outrigger canoes, surfskis and wing foils in the annual two-day Molokai Holokai race. 

“This year’s Molokai was perhaps one of the dreamiest downwind runs of the season according to the 43 paddlers that took to the Pailolo Channel from DT Fleming Beach Park to Kaunakakai,” said Clare Seeger Albino, who organized the race along with her husband, Gordon Albino, and other volunteers. 

Zane Keokoa Schweitzer remained the event’s reigning champion, crossing in a time of 1:33.…

Like every other sporting event last year, COVID-19 cancelled the annual 2020 Molokai Holokai, a paddling competition of friendly fun for locals as well as acclaimed paddlers and stand up paddlers of all ages. The pandemic also cancelled this summer’s event due to state rules and restrictions, said organizer Clare Albino. But then she decided to try something different – a virtual competition.

“Participants can make their own course in any place, anywhere in the world to make their distances and even break it down in stages and or days,” said Albino, explaining participants upload pictures and times to a virtual leader board, allowing the event to continue during a window that’s open right now.…

Runners Qualify for States

Five Molokai runners are headed to the state championships after the Molokai Boys and Girls Cross Country teams ran in the MIL Cross Country Championships last Saturday at Seabury Hall.

Senior Alex Mawae finished in 20th place with a time of 18:50.24, sophomore Namaka Ross finished in 24th with a time of 19:16.92 and junior Kamalu Kaawa-Richardson was 29th with a time of 19:58.23 and all three qualified for states. For the girls, freshman Kailani Bicoy qualified in 20th place with a time of 23:21.80. Leilyn McComas, another freshman, missed qualifying by one spot in 35th with a time of 25:20.29 and will be an alternate at states this Saturday at Seabury Hall.…

Day two of the Molokai Holokai Ho’olaule’a exceeded all expectations with 116 registered participants in the combined long from Kamalo to the Molokai Community Health Center. The main course was 10 miles, with a short course of five miles and keiki and makua course of 3/4 mile. Winds were easterly, a little on the lighter side but still perfect for the racers. The fleet was well rounded with 39 in the OC/ski division, 21 in the SUP, a youth OC 6 team and most impressive, 50 in the keiki division.

The day prior, while the racers were racing from Maui, about 50 kids showed up to clean up the harbor pulling out all kinds of rubbish from both sides of the pier.…

Cross Country Sends Three to States

Seven boys and seven girls represented Molokai in the Maui Interscholastic League Championship Cross Country race on Maui last Saturday. Three are now headed to the state championships on Oahu this Saturday, Oct. 27. Top finisher for the girls and headed to states in Keeya Bicoy who finished in 11th place overall with a time 22:53. The boy’s top finisher and headed to states in Alex Mawae who finished in 19th place with a time of 18:53. Also qualifying for states is Kamalu Kaawa Richardson who finished in 27th place with a time of 19:19.

MHS Cross Country Ready to Run

It’s a new season of fall sports at Molokai High School and this year’s Boys and Girls Cross Country teams are getting ready for their seasons to begin. The boys are coached by longtime Head Coach Ghandarva Mahina Hou Ross and the girls are coached by Kabbie Bicoy-Juario.
Bicoy-Juario excited for her team’s season to begin.
“We have 13 runners this year for the Lady Farmers and most of them are returnees,” she said. “We just started our season preparation and they all know there’s a lot to work to do but I know they will do well. We have great team spirit having most of my runners back.”…

Youth in Motion and Stand Up Paddle Association are proud to continue with the Molokai Holokai Paddle Festival. The festival conception is merging two great events with the Maui to Molokai Challenge on Saturday, July 7, departing from DT Flemming and the Molokai Holokai Paddle Race on Sunday, July 8, combining the two to the Molokai Holokai Paddle Festival.

The first finishers on Saturday are expected to arrive at Kaunakakai wharf between 12.30 and 1 p.m. Keep an eye on 16-year-old Alex Mawae from Molokai, 15-year-old Slater Fleck from Maui, 8-year-old Bobo Gallagher from Maui along with other youth from California who will be making their way across the Pailolo Channel.…

Swimmers Compete on Maui

The Molokai High Boys and Girls Swim teams traveled to Kihei Aquatic Center last weekend for two swim meets and had some strong finishes. Head Coach Amanda Labriola was very pleased with her team’s performance.

“We had a fairly good weekend Royden Abafo placed fifth overall in the 200 free, really making a name for him in that event,” she said. “Alex Mawae tried some new events this weekend and really made me and his team proud with his performance in the 500 free. Kapili Naehu-Ramos came back a made her mark for a second year in the 100 fly and Maire Kalawe’s first meet this season and she is showing great growth individually and with the team.”…
