Greenpeace Vessel Visits Molokai

Molokai had a notable visitor last week: the Rainbow Warrior and its Greenpeace crew. The 160-foot tall, and 200-foot long ship docked at Kaunakakai Wharf from Tuesday, Sept. 3 until Thursday, Sept. 5, giving time for residents to explore its decks and meet with the crew, as well as for Greenpeace to visit several Molokai sites. 

Greenpeace, a massive international advocacy nonprofit focused on environmental and political activism, landed in Hawaii following a campaign in the Emperor Seamount Chain just north of the Hawaiian Islands. 

The Greenpeace crew first spent time in Lahaina working on stream restoration, resource management and mapping where fruit trees once stood previous to the 2023 Lahaina fires, before crossing the channel to Molokai. …

A Night of Music to Remember

In the heart of Kaunakakai, Adrian Canencia was hard at work. The owner of the Ho’ala Cafe and SipShop along with wife Ella, Canencia needed a stage for a seven-member band to perform in the courtyard behind the Storehouse building. So, he built one. 

“Wood is like gold here,” said Canencia. Instead of relying predominantly on wood, he used long beams to frame the stage, but filled in the rest with two tons of gravel. Then, he tamped down the gravel and covered it with lauhala mats and throw rugs.

Fall Sports Update

The undefeated Molokai High School (MHS) girls volleyball team took on Maui Prep at the Barn this past weekend. The MHS girls competed in a close five-set game Friday before ultimately falling to Maui Prep 3-2. The Farmers likewise started out strong in Saturday’s rematch, taking the first set, but dropped the subsequent three in the 3-1 loss to Maui Prep. 

The MHS inaugural 11-man football season continued last weekend with a game at Maui High School. After a 59-0 loss to start the season against Lahainaluna, the Farmers were resilient, battling in a tough 29-14 loss to Maui High School.…

MEO Supports Suicide Prevention Month

Maui Economic Opportunity (MEO)’s Youth Services team participated in a ceremony Thursday marking September as Suicide Prevention Month in Maui County.

Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen read the proclamation. The event was organized by E Ola Hou Prevent Suicide Maui County Task Force and Mental Health America of Hawaii Maui County Branch, led by Danielle Bergan.

In his short talk, MEO Youth Services Director Dane Ka‘ae noted how suicide was a hush hush topic when he was growing up, but today “I can say the word ‘suicide.’ ” Ka’ae also noticed openness among youth on the topic of suicide.…

Molokai Crews Compete at World’s Largest Outrigger Regatta

Several Molokai crews braved the relentless Kona sun for over 18 miles as they raced between Kailua and Honaunau on Hawaii Island over the weekend.

“It was hot,” said Lohiao Paoa, who competed in the open men’s six-man crew for Molokai’s Wa’akapaemua Canoe Club.  

“The training we did the last four months has really helped,” said Paoa. In the race, the crew focused on keeping things simple and not trying to get too caught up in battling every canoe, he explained. 

“We just focused on trusting in our training, trusting in our stroke,” he said. 

The race has been held annually since 1972 in honor of Queen Lili’uokalani’s Sept.…

Small Businesses Work on Identity Rights

From creating profitable ideas, to accounting for overhead costs, to filing taxes, running a small business anywhere is difficult, but it can be especially hard to do so from Molokai. As part of a nationwide initiative, representatives from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) made the trip to Molokai to help business owners and local entrepreneurs navigate the world of trademarks and patents. 

“Our goal is always to drive inclusive innovation,” explained Mariessa Terrell, from the USPTO. 

Terrell, along with other USPTO representatives, walked Molokai residents through the fundamentals of creating and filing a patent or trademark for an idea or business, as well as navigating the U.S.…

Football Season Opener

Kicking off their first ever 11-man team, the MHS Farmers traveled to Maui to take on defending Maui Interscholastic League Division I champions Lahainaluna in a much-anticipated season opener. 

The Farmers were ultimately shut out in the 59-0 loss to the Lunas. The game, however, marked an important first step for the Farmers as they embark on the new challenge of competing in the 11-man MIL Division II league. Next, the Farmers will play Maui High School at War Memorial Stadium, before returning to Molokai to take on Baldwin High School, Sept. 14 at 10 a.m.…

Suzanne Isken will be giving a public talk on Tuesday, Sept. 10 from 2-3 p.m. at the Kualapuu Recreation Center located in Kualapuu. Suzanne is this year’s juror for the Hawaii Craftsmen Annual Statewide Exhibit.

Suzanne Isken served as executive director of Craft Contemporary in Los Angeles from 2011 through 2023. There, she led initiatives to support the creation of contemporary craft and build audiences by establishing a large-scale program of hands-on-experiences for the public. In 2019, Isken led the board of directors in a new strategic plan that renamed the museum formerly known as the Craft and Folk Art Museum as Craft Contemporary in order to reflect the relationship between materials, processes, and the human hand.…
