Training Brings Local Energy Expertise

By Jack Kiyonaga, Reporter

Through the Molokai’s Ho’ahu Energy Cooperative, nine residents are now qualified to install solar panels and migro-grid technology.

These newly certified graduates will be essential in reaching the state’s goal of 100 percent renewable energy by the year 2045, as well as responding to Molokai’s current energy and economic needs.

The Molokai trainees attended online and Zoom classes hosted by Arizona State University, before heading off to Arizona for a week of hands-on training. The trainees were all Molokai community members who “had shown an interest in the industry,” explained Ho‘ahu Program Coordinator Liliana Napoleon.

Molokai trainees were educated in “understanding safety protocols, reading manuals…stringing solar panels together, and understanding all the components of micro-grids.…

Options for the Unhoused

By Jack Kiyonaga, Reporter

For Molokai’s unhoused population, there could be relief in a new, fast-moving program.

Oahu’s Blanche McMillian is the CEO of Hui Mahi’ai Aina and an advisor to Gov. Josh Green. She arrived on Molokai last Friday morning with a proposal based on her own experiences.

One of 17 children, McMillian described the actions of her family and her Christian faith as the basis of her work with Hawaii’s homeless. McMillian has dedicated her life to putting that faith and upbringing into action. Through her Hui Mahi’ai Aina foundation, McMillian has built permanent homes for over 60 people.  …

Local Farmer Launches Chicken Feed Experiment

By Paul Hanley, Community Reporter

Molokai is experiencing a population explosion—of laying hens. Sust’ainable Molokai’s Poultry Egg Education Project (PEEP) has already helped 35 Molokai ‘ohana get into egg production, for their own use and for sale through the Mobile Market.

While this is a significant gain for local food self-reliance, Molokai producers are still dependent on imported chicken feed. To be truly self-sufficient, the feed will have to be produced here as well, and Molokai farmer Ehiku Arnold may have a solution. He has launched an experiment to see if laying hens can survive and thrive on feed he produces on his farm. …

Stranded

By Father Pat Killilea, St. Francis Church, Kalaupapa

Flight 583 from Honolulu to Kalaupapa was rather bumpy but we made it safely across the treacherous waters of the Ka’iwi Channel. The plane looped around the south side of Molokai island, then headed north before turning to the right and shortly thereafter preparing to land. At which, the cry went up, “This is not Kalaupapa.” Sure enough, we were about to land at Ho’olehua, the topside Molokai airport. We were not happy. We had landed at the wrong airport and it was close to sunset.

Sunday, Feb. 19, had started well for me.…

What is a Limited Liability Company?

Community Contributed

By Eileen M.S. Nims, Esq.

A Limited Liability Company (LLC) is a way you can protect your personal assets from creditors or law suits. It is a company that limits the liability you have toward any law suits to only the contents of your company. This is the way it works. When you have a business, or you have a rental unit, or you are providing a service, you can create an LLC for that activity. At the Hawaii State Department for Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA) you can apply for a business license and create your LLC in one easy step for less than $100.…

Resolving Transportation Issues

Wednesday, March 8th, 2023

I recently wrote to Senator DeCoite and Mayor Bissen to address state and county issues regarding transportation for Molokai residents to neighbor islands. And, to kindly ask their help in finding solutions for better service.

As you are aware, Molokai no longer has a ferry offering transportation to Maui. As you are also aware, there is now only one airline, Mokulele, servicing Molokai. When the ferry went out of business, a major factor was price competition with the three airlines that served Molokai at that time. Now there is only one airline, Mokulele.

There is a serious problem with only having one method of transportation to and from Molokai. …
