Born and raised in the Philippines, growing up I often felt the weight of societal expectations. Being a woman in a third-world country sometimes felt like trying to soar with clipped wings. These early experiences fueled my passion for gender equality and social justice. 

Life wasn’t easy during those early years, and I had to learn to be self-reliant from a young age. I became acutely aware of the dynamics of the society I was raised in, often feeling like an unnoticed breeze, passed by without leaving a mark.

Moving to Molokai was a whole new world for me, and one of its striking features is the remarkable power in everyone’s voices, regardless of their gender.…

Caroline Bicoy

Caroline Bicoy, 73, of Ho’olehua, Molokai, passed away on Aug. 29. She was born on July 21,1950 in Honolulu. 

Caroline graduated from Radford High School. She relocated to Molokai with her predeceased husband, the love of her life, Gerald Bicoy in the late 1970s. Caroline is predeceased by her parents Catalino Monderen, Miriam Monderen and Mary Rodrigues. She is also predeceased by her brother, Andrew Monderen. Caroline is survived by two brothers, Bernard (Mozel) Monderen of Makakilo and Shawn Murdoch of Honolulu and her two sisters, Debbie Rodrigues of Kahului and Frances (Richie) Young of Lihue. She is also survived by her three children, Cheryl (Daniel) Sterner of Ho’olehua, Kezia (Daniel) Asao of Wailuku and Matthew Bicoy of Ho’olehua.…

Lucy Leonilda Kealoha Whiting

Age 83, Lucy Leonilda Kealoha Whiting passed away on Sept. 12, in Arvada, Colorado. Born May 18, 1940, Lucy attended Roosevelt High School, Class of 1958. She was employed by the National Park Service in Kalaupapa on Molokai. After 20 years she retired and moved “topside” with her late husband Albert Pu where they had a Hawaiian Home Lands lot. After many weeks of clearing the land by hand, they built a beautiful home with stunning panoramic views of the west side of Molokai. They were very proud of that home.

She is survived by her sister Bernice Blalock, daughters Nadine Benton (Randy), Wendy White (Larry), Harrilyn-Lena Hindle (Mark) and son Harry Galdeira, Jr.…

Ronald “Naka” Nakagawa recorded the sixth hole-in-one of his lifetime on Sunday, Sept. 17 at iconic Ironwood Hills golf course. Naka, a retired US postal employee and one of Molokai’s professional golfers and all-around great guy, used a seven iron from 125 yards at the white tees on the back nine of his round on Sunday. It is the number one hole but on the back nine it is number 10. This hole-in-one will add to the four others that he has at Ironwood Hills along with one that he recorded at Kaluakoi golf course. Six total aces in his 62 year golf career, which is awesome.…

“You’re not alone,” said Dr. Deb Goebert, co-chair of the Prevent Suicide Hawaii Task Force. “Hope moves us forward.”

Goebert is one of many who have been impacted by the effects of suicide. She, along with over 80 attendees, met at the Molokai Canoe Club last Saturday for the Out of Darkness Walk in the hopes of raising awareness for suicide prevention. 

According to Goebert, events like the Out of Darkness Walk make a big difference, especially on neighbor islands where mental health resources are scarce. 

Communities like Molokai have higher rates of suicide, explained Goebert, but they also have more of the strengths that people struggling with mental health can use – like community and family connection. …

Gonzales Named HI Teacher of the Year Finalist

Among the 13,000 Hawaii Dept. of Education (HIDOE) educators, 15 were chosen as Teacher of the Year finalists. Kaunakakai School fifth grade teacher Kawika Gonzales was one of those select few. 

“A recognition like this reassures me that great things are continuing to happen on Molokai. It lets me know that I’ve had amazing teachers growing up on Molokai,” said Gonzales.

“We have outstanding teachers today that I work with, and I see the potential of amazing teachers in the future through our students,” Gonzales explained. “I am thankful for my family, friends, and island who continue to support me.…

Victories for MHS Sports

This past Saturday, the Molokai High School (MHS) Cross Country Team competed at King Kekaulike, featuring both the Boys and Girls divisions.

As a team, the Molokai boys placed fifth with a score of 143. Top finishers for Molokai included Jericho Adolpho placing 18th with a time of 20:02.8 and Sonny Dunham placing 22nd with a time of 20:55.5.

For the Girls Cross Country Team, top finishers included Kaia Yamashita placing 19th with a time of 26:15.2, Sonni Han with a time of 32:43.1 at 39th, and Ara Puaa with a time of 33:05.1 at 40th. …

Family Sues County Over Fatal Shooting in April

Members of Naki ‘ohana have sued the County of Maui and police officers involved in the April 30 shooting of 39-year-old Nathaniel Naki. In the lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court last week, his family claims officers on the scene used “unlawful deadly force when they discharged their weapons at Nathaniel without provocation.”

The suit is based on seven counts that include malicious, willful, and wanton conduct by police, emotional distress and suffering to Naki prior to his death, intentional infliction of emotional distress to his family, and wrongful death.
