Rising Vocalist Kuana Torres Kahele on Molokai

Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s (MACC) Artist-in-the-Community Program is pleased to present a special show with vocalist Kuana Torres Kahele on Wednesday, Jan. 16 at 7 pm in Kulana `Oiwi Halau on Molokai. Admission is free.

Kuana Torres Kahele was born on the slopes of Mauna Kea and began composing, arranging and playing traditional Hawaiian music at an early age. In 1995 with Kehau Tamure, Kuana formed the multi-award winning duo, Na Palapalai, who earned critical acclaim for reviving Hawaiian classics as well as for original compositions. Last year, Kuana’s highly anticipated solo release, “Kaunaloa,” excited the hula world and re-ignited passion for Hawaiian music from everyday fans, garnering him multiple Na Hoku Hanohano Awards.…

Strong Weekend for Basketball

The Molokai High School Boys Basketball team swept Lanai last weekend in two home games played at Kaunakakai Gym. On Friday, the Farmers edged out the Pine Lads 62-53, with Hauoli Falealii scoring 22 points for Molokai, David Rapanot added 19 and Paka Adolpho had 16. On Saturday, the boys again beat Lanai 49-39. High scorers were Falealii with 25 points and Adolpho with 10. The boys will be playing against St. Anthony at home this weekend.

The Molokai Girls Basketball team also had a strong weekend over the Pine Lasses in Lanai City.…

A historical exhibit developed by Ka `Ohana O Kalaupapa opened this week at Saint Damien Church in Kaunakakai, where it will remain through Feb. 3. The exhibit, “A Source of Light, Constant and Never-Fading,” emphasizes the strong relationship between the people of Kalaupapa and the Royal Family of Hawaii, a chapter of the history of Kalaupapa not often told.

A presentation about the work of the `Ohana in reconnecting families to their Kalaupapa ancestors will be held Thursday, Jan. 10 beginning at 6 p.m. at the church. Light pupus will be served. The public is welcome.…

Molokai Energy Festival

The second annual Energy Festival, hosted by I Aloha Molokai (IAM) will be held next weekend and focuses on sensible, renewable energy solutions. On Jan. 11 and 12, 2013, at Mitchell Pauole Center, Kaunakakai, Molokai over 1000 people are expected to participate in panels and workshops, listen to local music, and eat ono food at the event.

The opening ceremony on Friday, Jan. 11 will be a cultural welcome to Native American guests from the mainland and feature guest speaker Colette Machado, chair of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.

Saturday workshops will educate about construction of a low-cost solar water heater, do-it-yourself energy audits, reducing electricity use in the home, and photovoltaic (PV) options for homes and businesses.…

Special Olympics Basketball Takes Gold

The Molokai Special Olympics basketball team is on a roll bringing home the gold, taking the championship on Oahu for the past seven years, according to Molokai Special Olympics Coordinator Rita Kalahiki. This year, though, they played with a mixed team of both veteran and less experienced players — and still won gold last weekend at the annual statewide Holiday Classic.

“The team was too good, no one would play against them,” said Kalahiki of the basketball team’s success streak. So in order for the competition to agree to play against Molokai this year, Kalahiki said she had to mix up the island’s three teams of different levels — A, B and C teams — to form two new A teams.…

A Molokai Middle School student robotics team saw science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in real world applications while touring Hawaii’s largest industrial employer, Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility, Nov. 30. The students descended into an underground space with pumps capable of emptying a 53 million gallon dry dock. They also toured USS Hawaii, one of the U.S. Navy’s most technologically advanced ships, a Virginia-class fast attack submarine.

“It was one of the best experiences of my life,” said seventh-grader Noah Keanini.

The students were on Oahu to compete in a First Lego League robotics competition.…

The Friends of the Molokai Public Library is pleased to present a reading by acclaimed poet Ariana Nash on Wednesday, Dec. 19, at 6 p.m. at the Molokai Library. Ariana will read poems from her just-released book “Instructions for Preparing Your Skin” which won the 2011 Philip Levine Prize in Poetry. She is also a recipient of a Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Prize and a MacDowell Colony Residency.

Ariana’s poems are precise and frank, measured and uncompromising. She has the ability to illuminate the intimacies of human connections, and while doing so, she demonstrates an eye for textures, spaces, and metaphoric images.…

Audubon Christmas Bird Count

The 113th Audubon Christmas Bird Count (CBC) will take place on Molokai Thursday, Dec. 20. The nationwide event is an annual count that takes place in established areas during the same time period during the month of December. The information compiled over time provides a useful tool indicating population trends of bird species.

The topside Molokai count is divided into three routes: Seabirds and waterfowl via a northern pelagic route, forest birds at the Waikolu Lookout, and shorebirds and waterfowl along the south shore. The Kalaupapa peninsula is the fourth site in the count circle and is limited to five participants.…

A shocking fugitive dust storm invaded Ho`olehua on Sunday, Dec. 2 at 10:12 a.m — the second such occurrence in less than a month.  Winds traveling from the south-east at about 10 to 15 miles per hour blew across Monsanto’s vast exposed land, lifting a disturbing amount of earth into the air and sending it several miles across the landscape.  This chemical saturated dust involuntarily entered and contaminated the homes, yards and vehicles of many residents.  What I found most alarming was the pungent scent of chemicals that filled the air during this occurrence.

Fugitive dust is also known as particle pollution.  …
