An Evening with the Galliard String Quartet

The Galliard String Quartet, considered Hawaii’s premier string quartet, will perform a free concert March 5 in the Kaunakakai Elementary School Cafeteria. The students from the Molokai String and Brass program, under the direction of Bob Underwood, will open for the Honolulu-based quartet. The Molokai students will also work with the quartet individually in master classes while the musicians are on Molokai.

The Galliard String Quartet performs programs that include the works of Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Ravel, Schubert and Brahms. Music of the masters is the Galliard’s forte, but the group’s repertoire also includes Strauss waltzes, romantic interludes, light classics, Hawaiian music, popular music and more.…

Fighting Fire to Save Coral

A wildfire blazed across the south slope from Kalamaula to Kawela in 1998. It took over two hours for the first helicopter to respond. There was no command center and no unified radio communication. The fire claimed 15,000 acres of land.

A fire broke out in the same area 11 years later. The first helicopter responded in 40 minutes. There was an effective command center and communication through a single radio system. That fire burnt 8,000 acres of land.

The difference between the fires – the difference that saved 7,000 acres of mountainside – was the Molokai Fire Task Force, an organization of various agencies and groups with a unified mission to prevent and control fires.…

The Molokai Bowhunters Club wishes everyone a Happy New Year. We plan to keep everyone informed of our club activities throughout the year. Our range is located in Kalae, just past Coffees of Hawaii on the left, heading up to Kalaupapa. The range consists of 10 acres of official targets, uphill & downhill challenges and practice targets.

The national FoodCorps is recruiting service members throughout Hawai‘i who are passionate about healthy food, farms and kids to help connect our keiki to real food and help them grow up healthy. Sust `aina ble Molokai, the grassroots community organization that educates keiki to bring back Molokai’s legacy of `aina momona, will be a service site for two members.

FoodCorps, a national organization addressing childhood obesity and food insecurity in underserved communities, operates in 12 states and will add Hawai`i, California and New Jersey this year. The Kohala Center will be the Hawai`i host site.

FoodCorps is accepting applications for its third class of service members and is seeking to hire ten service members in Hawai‘i.…

Island Air closed the sale of the airline today to a newly formed holding company owned by Lawrence J. Ellison. The sale secures the future of Island Air and its employees.

There are no planned staff changes and Island Air will continue its operations as usual while developing plans for additional planes, routes and services. All current tickets will be honored and all Cloud9 members will retain their status and benefits.

Wrestlers Bring Home the Gold

The Molokai High School Wrestlers competed at the MIL championships on Maui this weekend. The girls team finished second overall, and the boys finished fourth overall. There were ten wrestlers who qualified for the state tournament this coming weekend.

I have been in search of someone that is a mystery to me. I carry a picture that has only half a story. I’m hoping before it’s too late to find what I’m looking for – my biological father.

My mom and my biological father met in Taiwan in 1969. He came from a small island in Hawaii. Apparently he was stationed in Japan and went to Taiwan when he was on military leave, and they began a long distance relationship. On my first birthday, he came back to Taiwan to visit and take a picture with my mom and myself.…

22 tons of hope

As families come out to Kaunakakai Ball Park this July to receive free food, entertainment and services, they just may receive something else as well – hope.

Convoy of Hope, a faith-based nonprofit whose mission is to feed the world, will come to Molokai July 19, 20 and 21, offering free groceries, family portraits, haircuts, health screenings, shoes and lunch to everyone who shows up for their weekend of hope.

Lynette Eastman, Convoy of Hope Hawaii organizer, said they will have 22 tons of groceries – 5,000 bags – waiting for the families who come out.

“We will not allow anything to be sold,” Scott Sonoda, Convoy of Hope Hawaii coordinator, said.…

Two Wheels and a Cause

The Sons of Hawaii Motorcycle club revved into town Feb. 15, bringing with them support for a good cause.

Each year the club comes to Molokai with a makana for a nonprofit, and this year they presented Ka Hale Pomaika`i recovery center in Mana`e with $500 to go toward groceries for the house where they offer support and services to people recovering from addictions or alcoholism.

“The Sons of Hawaii wanted to improve the image motor cycle clubs have and reduce the stigma associated with them,” Shari Lynn of Ka Hale Pomaika`i said. “In that way we have a common force.…

Value-added and specialty foods consultant Lou Cooperhouse will present his “Food Business Basics: Getting Started and Finding Your Niche in the Specialty Foods Business” workshop March 15 from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at the Lanikeha Community Center in Ho‘olehua, Molokai.

The workshop is designed for farmers seeking to develop their raw product into a value-added product that they can bring to markets, entrepreneurs and restraunteurs interested in diversifying their revenue streams with specialty food products and established producers looking to take their food business to the next level.

Cooperhouse will deliver his three-hour “Food Business Basics” workshops, and then Nicole Milne, agriculture business specialist at the Kohala Center, will present two one-hour sessions focused on financial resources available to Hawai`i farmers as well as strategies for marketing agricultural products.…
