Vet Center Awaits Final Inspection

Only an inspection and a certificate stand between Molokai Veterans Caring for Veterans (MVCV) and the official opening of their brand new, long-awaited center.

The center just needs approval from the Department of Wastewater, the last in a lengthy series of inspections. Members will then wait for the county to process their application for a Certificate of Occupancy, which MVCV officers said could take a few weeks. The services of a commercial building surveyor will be required to ensure that the whole building is up to code and is ready for public use.

After nine years of construction and legal woes, the veterans said it’s the last agonizing step before the center is finished.…

Time Management Workshop

Thursday, February 19th, 2015

KBC News Release

“I don’t have enough time!”  How often have we said this?  What tasks need to be done?  How am I ever going to wade through all this “stuff?”  The Kuha`o Business Center (KBC) is presenting a workshop on Time Management on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 10 a.m. as a way to answer these questions.

Each of us has tasks we need to accomplish for self, work, and family.  Some of the subjects to be discussed are: How to organize your day, how to set priorities, and the importance of information storage and its retrieval.  The workshop will be based on the work of David Allen, who has written three books on the subject. …

Pine Lads Best Farmers

Wednesday, February 18th, 2015

The Lanai boys’ basketball team topped Molokai twice over the weekend, beating the Farmers 57-38 on Friday and 64-45 on Saturday to end the regular season.

On Friday the Farmers stayed in step with the Pine Lads and were only down 38-37 after three quarters. However, the Pine Lads outscored them 19-1 in the final quarter for the large win. On Saturday the Farmers did the opposite, bringing in 19 points in the fourth quarter, though it wasn’t enough to beat the Pine Lads’ consistent offensive performance throughout the game.

Edel-Marc Alvarez’s 13 points led the charge for the Farmers on Friday, and Kaina Adolpho was the top scorer on Saturday with 11 points.…

Two From Molokai Among Rep Nominees

Tuesday, February 17th, 2015

Three nominees have been selected out of 13 applicants to replace Rep. Mele Carroll. Two of the nominees are from Molokai – Lori Buchanan and Lynn DeCoite – while the third, Lucienne de Naie, is from Huelo, Maui.

The three names have been forwarded to Gov. David Ige, who will make the final selection by April 1. Carroll, who resigned on Feb. 1 for health reasons, had held the District 13 seat, which encompasses East Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe and Molokini, since 2005.

Last Saturday, a 22-person committee from Molokai, Maui and Lanai convened using the University of Hawaii’s Skybridge interactive television system and interviewed the 13 applicants for the seat.…

Aloha all my fellow veterans and residents of Molokai, old Jesse here with all the veterans news and upcoming events. There has been a great deal of talk recently about the movie “American Sniper,” and the true story of former Navy Seal Chris Kyle and his tragic death. There has also been much said about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in the last month or two, and the difficult time that combat veterans go through when they are faced with transitioning out of the military.

I’d like to talk about PTSD and get your thoughts about it as well.…

Opinion by Rick Baptiste

Uncle Google says that Lokahi is the creative and fruitful harmony that arises out of diversity.  Wow!  I have to admit that this definition excites me.   Why?  Because, as long as I have lived on Molokai there has been ooka pila diversity.   Then this is good news!  We qualify to be candidates of Lokahi.   We don’t have to be understood to work together for the good.  Uncle Google says that whatever we give predominant focus to, we become.  If we focus on the good, more will come.  When situations arise, the successful see them as opportunities instead of problems. …

I keep hearing that everyone all over Molokai is trying the 21-Day diet. Awesome! That means you are already aware that you need to change something, and you are trying hard. Is 21 days the magical number that you need to create a new eating habit? Enough people keep saying this, so of course, everyone is starting to believe.

Let’s look a little at how changing habits really works. In the 1960s, a plastic surgeon named Maxwell Maltz did research, and noticed on himself, that it takes 21 days to form a new habit. His book Psycho Cybernetics went on to sell 30 million copies!…
