Aloha al my fellow veterans and people of Molokai, old Jesse here with all the veterans news and upcoming events. I am sure that all my fellow Marines will remember 50 years ago this month the battle of Chu Lai South Vietnam. A main force of Viet Cong were preparing an attack on Chu Lai in August 1965 that was stopped in its tracks by the Marines in what was the first major battle of the war. The following history is from an article by Al Hemingway in this month’s issue of VFW Magazine.

Gen. Lewis “Silent Lew” Walt, commanding general of the III Marine Amphibious Force, had intelligence reports that the 1st Viet Cong Regiment was missing for an assault on the airfield at Chu Lai.…

Farmers First Look, Part 1

Last season was full of firsts for Molokai’s fall sports teams. Boys’ air riflery earned its first-ever Maui Interscholastic League (MIL) title. Girls’ volleyball hosted its first MIL championships. The cross country boys finished first in their division, while the football team competed in the league’s first eight-player title game. More experienced and just as hungry, Molokai athletes and coaches return for another exciting season. In a two-part series, the Dispatch takes a look at the four sports kicking off this fall. Committee Votes for Community Plan Extension

Nearing the end of an intensive six-month series of meetings pushing six hours each, members of the Community Plan Advisory Committee (CPAC) have voted to request the county council for an extension to the planning process that will guide Molokai’s next 10 years. The decision came in response to residents who felt the community needed more time to give input on the plan, along with a commitment to produce a quality plan, according to committee members.

“It’s taken centuries for Molokai to be as precious as it is, and in decades we can screw it up,” said CPAC member Greg Jenkins, who supported an extension.…

Fence for Coconut Grove Generates Mixed Reactions

The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL) received permission last week to place a fence around Kapuaiwa Coconut Grove, a move that some residents feel will protect a historic site but others feel will prove ineffective.

Molokai’s 150-year-old grove became the subject of recent scrutiny after disease and invasive insects were discovered in some of the trees last December. The State Historical Preservation Division (SHPD), which authorized the fence, said in a statement that seeing “the affected coconut trees within the grove reinforced the need for protective fencing” for the health of the grove and the safety of the public. These guys do exterior renovations like siding, stucco and fences and they can help property owners who are planning to renovate their exterior or build a new fence.…

Solve a Mars Mystery

Come and solve a mystery about a strange object found on Mars at a program at the Molokai Public Library on Wednesday, Aug. 26 from 6 to 7 p.m. We will use real data collected by Mars Rovers, amazing robots that send photographs to Earth. Using the practices of planetary scientists, we will investigate to find out if the object is a rock, a tool or a jelly donut?

You can also design a prototype for a new Mars Rover and decide what information it will gather about the Red Planet.

The program is provided by Alestra Menendez, a curriculum developer at the UC Berkeley Lawrence Hall of Science.…

Though Molokai is a small community, we’re not immune from child abuse. Education is an important step in prevention. Parents, don’t be afraid to talk to your children about staying safe and healthy. Here are two scenarios that you can discuss with your children:

1) When Junior goes to the doctor, the doctor looks at all of his body parts to make sure he is not sick. The doctor checks his nose, his arms, his tummy, and his private parts. Is the doctor checking Junior’s private parts to keep him healthy? Yes or no?

Give Your Two Cents on County Budget

County of Maui News Release

In September and October, residents of Maui County will have the opportunity to give their input on the county’s budget for Fiscal Year 2016-2017. Mayor Alan Arakawa and his administration will host a series of community meetings to receive comments and suggestions from the public regarding the proposed budget. The opportunity to give feedback on Molokai will be on Monday, Oct. 5 at 4 p.m. at the Mitchell Pauole Center.

Citizens with an interest in the county budget are encouraged to attend and offer input, either as individuals or on behalf of an organization. Both written and verbal comments will be accepted.…

Funding Nonprofit Community Projects

Young Brothers, Limited (YB) is now accepting online grant applications from nonprofit community organizations in Maui County for its Community Gift Giving Program. The program will award grants of up to $2,500 per organization. According to Young Brothers, the new online tool streamlines the application process for community nonprofit groups. Applicants should go to GIVINGtrax.com to register their organization, create a profile, and submit an application.

Community organizations that meet the criteria are invited to submit applications to Young Brothers’ Community Advisory Board, via GivingTrax.com, for grant consideration. Those criteria are IRS approved under Section 501 (c) 3, and the purpose of the organization is related to health, education, civic and community service, youth activities, cultural enrichment, environment or special community projects.…

Students Show National Promise in Health Careers

At the end of June, the Molokai High School Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) club attended the National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, California. HOSA is a student centered club that provides assistance, leadership opportunities and competitive venues to help prepare high school students for careers in healthcare.

Misty Parker was recognized on stage as she received the Barbara James Award for her service to the Molokai community. Luke Kikukawa earned a HOSA scholarship and was recognized with many other national recipients. Finally, Giesha Nunez served as a Hawaii HOSA state officer, helping to plan events and meetings for the national competition.…

Bible Prophecy Seminar Kicks Off

Revelation of Hope Ministries News Release

This week, the Molokai Seventh-day Adventist Church will be hosting a two-week seminar to explore and study the Bible prophecies found in the book of Revelation.

Local boy Keoki Gandeza, associate speaker from Revelation of Hope Ministries, will guide the community through a study of the book’s symbols and the messages they hold for today’s world.

“We’re inviting the community to come together, no matter what their background, those who go to church or don’t go to church, to learn and reaffirm, why we can have hope and peace in a time when the world seems to offer us none,” said Gandeza.…
