Services for Kupuna During COVID-19

Kupuna are among those most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Older adults have shown to be among those most at risk from the virus, and with many regular services discontinued, many kupuna are fearful to leave their homes for essentials.

Molokai General Hospital Protocol Updates

MGH News Release

Molokai General Hospital has begun using an external triage system (patients are greeted and screened outside the ED) to screen patients. Those who may meet criteria will be tested outside of the hospital to expedite care. The testing is an extension of the emergency department services.

We encourage anyone who suspects they may have been exposed to COVID-19 to speak with their medical provider to find out if they meet testing requirements.

As of Wednesday, March 25, Molokai General Hospital will be limiting its number of entrances to one.  All people entering the main facility will need to use the front lobby sliding glass door. …

County Emergency Rules Mandate Staying at Home

County of Maui News Release

Mayor Michael Victorino announced a “stay at home and work from home” amendment to the Public Health Emergency Rules in an effort to fight the spread of COVID-19.

The amendment is effective at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, March 25. The new order will be in effect until April 30.

“The health and safety of our community has always been my top priority and I believe we need

Molokai Gets $14M in State Funding

More than $204 million in Captial Improvement Funds have been released by the state for District 7 which covers Molokai, Lanai, Hana, East and Upcountry Maui and Kaho’olawe, and Molokai will be getting more than $14 million of that for projects island-wide. They include improvements to the Molokai Irrigation System, airport facilities and projects at several schools.

The Molokai Irrigation System has been earmarked with $9.3 million in funds for plans, design and construction of improvements and equipment. Design for improvements of various facilities and other related improvements at the Molokai Airport has been allo-cated with $3.5 million.…

Charles C. “Boogie” Reyes, Sr. of Kaunakakai, Molokai was born Oct. 2, 1936. He passed away peacefully on Feb. 22, 2020 at the age of 83. He is survived by children Susan (Frank) Kaahanui, Travis Reyes and Chucky Reyes (deceased); spouse Janet (deceased); and siblings Oriette (deceased), Gilbert (deceased), George and Lawrence.
Molokai service will be held on Friday, March 20, 2020 at the Ho’olehua Veterans Cemetery. Viewing will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and service and burial will be from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.…

Lessons from Covid-19

Watching the Administration floundering like a fish out of water in the Covid-19 pandemic teaches Molokai a great lesson.

The Administration of the U.S. lags way behind the rest of the world in responding to the threat. Why is this? How can a nation that claims intellectual, economic, technological, and moral world supremacy fail to greet the pandemic with at least meaningful testing ?

This has happened largely because of the Administration’s refusal to recognize the significance of Covid-19. The news is still full of fools ranting against the Left for discussing the matter. It has even been suggested that Democrats and Liberals are intentionally damaging the economy by publicizing the issue.…

Keep School Grounds Clean

We need your help. Please malama our school, Kaunakakai Elementary. We realize that there are many sport events close to our school and that there is no other playground in town. However, Kaunakakai School is actually not a public park and you are loitering if you are on our campus. If you do find yourself on our school grounds after school hours, please remember that children and teachers may still be working on campus, even on the weekends. The parking lots are part of the Department of Education property and therefore, there is no smoking or drinking alcohol permitted anywhere on the property at any time.…

Molokai Applicants Sought for Liquor Commission

Molokai applicants are being sought for a vacancy on Maui County Liquor Commission. Interested Molokai residents should submit applications as soon as possible.
Applicants must be available to attend meetings on Maui. These are held at 9 a.m., usually on the first Thursday of the month. Maui County pays for allowable travel expenses.
Responsibilities include hearing public testimony, reviewing policies and standards. Panel members make recommendations and decisions that impact Maui County. Positions are appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Maui County Council. While no monetary compensation is provided for serving on a board or commission, the public’s participation helps provide an important government service.…
