The Hui O Kukui monthly Ace tournament was held on Saturday, Aug. 1 at Ironwood Hills Golf Course. The winner was The Molokai Dispatch’s own Sports Reporter Rick Schonely. Schonely shot 40-43 for a gross total of 83 and with his 14 handicap his net 69 finished in first place.

“I would like to thank Ironwoods Hills and all of the Molokai golfers that I play with that have helped me to become a better person and a better golfer,” he said. “We enjoy competing against each other but the best part is having fun and getting good exercise.…

WiFi, Services for Molokai Undergrads

Maui Media Lab News Release

We will be making Maui Media Lab’s East End production facilities just down the road from Keawanui fishpond available for one cohort of undergrads on the East End of Molokai that won’t be able to travel to colleges and universities on the mainland this upcoming semester.

All classes and workshops will be held outside on our deck and in our gardens, picnic style, and with socially distanced cohorts. Our wireless network will be made available to undergrads that need network access to connect to their remote classes. We will also provide access to our laser and inkjet printers as well as our mobile multi-track audio recording and digital video production facilities as requested, all properly socially distanced.…

Bayer ‘Health Care’

Regarding some of the statements in the Bayer News Release in last week’s issue (July 22), the facts need clarifying. The company, which used to be called Monsanto, claims to be a “global enterprise with core competencies in the life science fields of health care and nutrition.”

Currently Bayer faces a court order to pay $20.5 million in damages to Dewayne Johnson, the groundskeeper who was sickened by Bayer products and technology. The jury found that Monsanto (Bayer) “ ‘acted with malice and oppression’ by failing to acknowledge glyphosate as a cancer-causing agent.” That jury awarded $289 million — was reduced at appeal.…

Can a CBSFA Bring Us Together?

To support a Community-based Subsistence Fishing Area (CBSFA) at Mo’omomi for me is not an effort to disrespect those who oppose it. Despite the issues, we are still neighbors, friends, and family who all want to do right by this island, even if we disagree on the right way to do it.

Especially now, in this heightened time of vulnerability and uncertainty, we recognize how reliant we are on our resources. Our fisheries in particular are Hawaii’s greatest source of protein. This is an important moment to consider how we will ensure their sustainability now and for future generations.…

Don’t Forget to Vote

Are you registered to vote? If you answered yes, you should have already received your ballot in the mail and don’t forget to mail it back! If you answered no… you still can!

While July 9 was widely published as the deadline to register for voting in the Primary Election, you can visit Molokai’s Voting Service Center at Mitchell Pauole Center Conference Room to register and vote on the spot, until Election Day on Aug. 8 at 7 p.m.

While Hawaii has switched to an all-mail voting system this year, you can still vote in-person if you’d prefer.…

Brushfire Burns 20 Acres

A brushfire on Puu Kapele Ave. in Ho’olehua burned 20 acres last Friday. Firefighters responded at about 3 p.m. with three fire engines, one emergency callback crew, two fire tankers and tankers and dozers from the County Dept. of Public Works. A helicoper also responded from Maui.

Crews on the ground initiated the battle against the blaze, while Air 1 assisted with water drops in hard to reach areas, according to Maui County Fire officials. Dozers cut roads for access as well as cut firebreaks to help prevent the fire’s spread.

The Fire Dept. reported dry conditions and winds at 15 to 25 miles per hour.…

More Restrictions to Come If Cases Keep Rising

With COVID-19 cases soaring in the triple digits statewide, school opening has been delayed, tight restrictions are again being placed on gatherings, and officials warn if case numbers don’t get under control soon, further drastic steps may need to be taken again to curb the virus’ spread.

Last Friday, July 31, marked the third day in a row of more than 100 cases in the state. Last weekend saw lower numbers but health officials say those lags likely represented delays in lab reporting resulting in incomplete data. July 30’s 124 cases included 32 pediatric cases in children ages 18 and under, while 18 of the 123 new cases reported for July 31 were children (individual ages not reported).…

Public Works Gets New Baseyard

A long-awaited, new baseyard for the Maui County Highways Division was completed and blessed last week, located in the industrial park area near Maui Electric’s power plant. The $7.7 million building includes a 2,560-square-foot administrative building, a 7,440-square-foot maintenance building, a 3,960-square-foot vehicle storage building and a new garage with pole lifts and an overhead crane from the crane hire in Perth company.
The old Highways baseyard was located in a tsunami inundation zone in Kaunakakai that frequently flooded, and workers operated out of an aging garage and container offices. The new facility is at higher elevation out of the flood zone and will serve as a safe base for Molokai Public Works staff to respond to emergencies.…
