Na’iwa DHHL Subdivision Gets Infrastructure

After years of waiting, the Na’iwa agricultural subdivision in Ho’olehua near the airport will be get-ting infrastructure improvements including access roads, driveways, electrical connections and potable and irrigation water lines. Site inspections and field work for the improvements will begin this week on the Department of Hawaiian Homelands subdivision, which encompasses 341 acres and 58 lots.

Last year, state legislature released $400,000 out of a projected $6,500,000 total project cost. The infrastructure improvements are slated for completion in June, 2023.  To oversee such projects, services like project management calgary can be contacted by they can ensure that the project stays on track, within the allocated budget, and is completed on time.…

Funding for Ag Losses Due to Deer

Molokai farmers and ranchers who have suffered losses at the mouths of axis deer since last summer can now apply for funding to help mitigate the damages. The Hawaii Dept. of Agriculture just announced financial assistance available on a first come, first served basis for axis deer damages on Molokai, with applications being accepted until March 8 at 12 p.m.

“This relief initiative is to provide emergency financial assistance to eligible Molokai [and] Maui farmers and ranchers with sustained economic losses resulting from the loss of pasture forage for cattle, death of cattle, destruction of farms, reduced crop yields, and other agriculture property damages, arising directly from the excessive axis deer population since July 1, 2020,” states the announcement.…

New Case, County Seeks Mask Up Volunteers

One new Molokai case of COVID-19 was reported last week, bringing the island’s total cases to 27. It was originally miscategorized on Maui, then Dept. of Health records were corrected to list it on Molokai, according to the Feb. 18 report. No other details were available.

A new Mask Up campaign in Maui County aims to boost face mask use. The initiative uses volunteers to serve as community ambassadors who “kindly remind visitors and residents that wearing face masks is mandatory,” according to a Maui County news release last week.

Volunteers will approach unmasked individuals with a copy of Maui County’s Public Health Emergency Rules to explain that mask-wearing is compulsory in all public areas of Maui, Molokai and Lanai.…

Soil Investigation at Gas Storage Site

Arcadis U.S., Inc (Arcadis) will be completing a site investigation project on behalf of Chevron Environmental Management Company at the Kaunakakai Terminal, scheduled tentatively for Feb. 22 to April 9, 2021. A non-invasive investigation of PAR Hawaii’s Kaunakakai Bulk Storage Facility was requested by the Hawaii State Department of Health Hazard Evaluation and Emergency Response division to understand the impact of petroleum in the soil.

The site falls within a special management area (Permit #SM6 2020/0002) and includes potential cultural and archaeological assets present in the subsurface, prompting the desire for a non-intrusive investigation. The project will be performed at the empty lots on 125 Kaunakakai Place and 28 Beach Place (privately owned), along the Kaunakakai Place right-of-way (owned by the Hawaii State Department of Transportation), and in the northeastern portion of Malama Cultural Park (owned by the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands).…

Deer Culling Concerns

I live on the west end of Molokai and spend a lot of time walking the roads and through the thorny groves of the kiawe and lantana. I am concerned because of the increased demand for Axis deer culling in our area. The Axis deer population on the west end has been extensively culled by starvation already.

There are no longer the vast herds of mature animals, and in my humble opinion, the total population has been reduced by over 70 percent! Currently I only see small groups of skinny yearlings and the rare mature doe or even rarer buck. A year ago, I counted hundreds in a day.…

The Power to the Period Project aims to donate feminine hygiene products to Molokai facilities in need. Economic disruptions like the pandemic can lead to people who menstruate losing access to feminine hygiene products like pads, tampons, etc. Menstruation supplies are essential items.

New Roof and Bleachers Coming for Kaunakakai School

Kaunakakai School, along with other schools on island, will be getting improvements as part of the state’s Capital Improvements Project (CIP) funds. Last week, Gov. Ige released $750,000 for Kaunakakai Elementary to receive roof and gutter replacements for buildings B and D, along with construction of bleachers and School canopy installations.

Gov. Abercrombie said the funding will help schools and benefit Hawaii’s students by maintaining and upgrading school facilities. “These projects continue to fulfill our commitment to a new day for the people of Hawaii and stimulate the economy,” he said.

When it comes to gutter installation, it’s just as important to ensure they are functioning properly.…

New Molokai Case Last Week

Last week brought a new COVID-19 case on Molokai, reported by the Dept. of Health on Feb. 11, bringing the island’s total cases since the pandemic began to 26.

Kaunakakai Elementary School closed last Friday for sanitation due to two students’ exposure to COVID-19.

“I was made aware today of COVID-19 cases involving two of our students from the same household,” wrote Principal Daniel Espaniola Feb. 11 letter to school families. He added he was “awaiting documentation confirming their diagnosis.” It was unclear as of Friday whether the two students’ exposure was related to the case reported by the DOH, or separate.…
