Cancer Fund Gets $9K Grant

Molokai Cancer Fund News Release

Molokai Cancer Fund received a grant for $9,000, which will help Molokai residents diagnosed with cancer and are undergoing treatment with travel to Honolulu or Maui. Travel costs can be so expensive for those who have limited or no travel benefit from their health insurances (underinsured or uninsured).

This is the first grant funding received from Bayer and we will keep helping our Molokai Cancer patients and their caregivers through people’s donations and through our annual Walk for Ohana Fundraising event which was halted due to the pandemic. On behalf of Molokai Cancer Fund, we would like to express our best gratitude to Bayer Molokai, especially to Dawn Bicoy who always keeps us informed and to Stacie Sasagawa from Oahu who also sends reminders.…

Mahalo for Car Assistance

At midday on Wednesday, June 7, on a very hot sunny day, my car, a dark green ‘97 Honda CR-V, stalled from overheating on the west end Kalua Koi Road. I let the engine cool down then started again. After several seconds it quickly overheated and stalled again. Three for four times as I was trying to continue on my way, I had to stop along and requested a gallon of water each time to fill the radiator. When I realized it was futile because I discovered the radiator was leaking profusely, I had to call for help. Fortunately, I had my cell phone with me and made a call to get emergency towing near me.…

Constance Clews

Connie Clews, beloved mother and wife, passed peacefully on June 28, 2021. She was born on Jan. 25, 1939. She was a longtime Molokai community yoga instructor.

Connie was born in Cleveland, Ohio. She attended Case Western University, Tufts and Brandeis University, receiving a MA in English.

Connie found her passion in many ways, from music to arts. She had a love for life. Her true passion was teaching yoga.

She was certified as a Hatha Yoga instructor in 1971, by Indra Devi. Passing the gift of mental peace and health was her true wish for all.

She was a true friend to all.…

Priest from Molokai Elected Provincial

Father Lane Akiona, SS.CC., a Sacred Hearts priest from Molokai, has been elected the next Provincial of the United States Province of the Priests and Brothers of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (SS.CC.). Father Lane will serve the U.S. Province which stretches from Massachusetts all the way to India and includes South Texas, California, Hawaii, Fiji and Tonga. Father Lane is presently Pastor of St. Augustine-by-the-Sea Parish in Waikiki on Oahu.

Congratulations to Father Lane, a “Molokai boy,” on his election as Provincial of the Sacred Hearts United States Province of Priests and Brothers!…

Fire Assistance Mahalo

On Friday, June 25, because of faulty and not to code electrical wiring, my small hale in Kawela was engulfed in flames within seconds and left me with literally nothing but the pajamas I was wearing and my dog.

I want to thank the Fire Department that responded, the Police Department and all these amazing people that helped me; Ben and Chris Ann Severson, Patty Keaweamahi, Pattee Kawaauhau, Theresa Kealoha, Jelden Jose and Titah English, and a neighbor whom I have never met but held my hand and stayed with me and offered me his couch to sleep on that night (would love to know you and thank you in person), Aaron Boswell and Sean Simon (both with the Fire Department).…

Molokai’s Stacy Helm Crivello is among three applicants selected by the Democratic Party to fill the House District 13 vacancy left when former Molokai Representative Lynn DeCoite was named a state senator. Crivello, a former County Councilmember and community advocate, was selected along with Claire Kamalu Carroll of Hana, Maui and Linda Clark of Kaupo, Maui from among five candidates who submitted their applications for the vacancy. The three names will be sent to Gov. David Ige for his consideration to fill the House vacancy, and he has until Monday, August 16 to select one of these individuals.…

Power Out for Over 10 Hours in Town

A fault on Maui Electric’s circuit left residents and businesses in Kaunakakai without power for more than 10 hours on the morning of Friday, July 2.

The outage began around 11:50 p.m. on July 1, and the majority of customers were restored at 9:40 a.m., according to Maui Electric. The remaining customers were brought back online around noon. Nearly 600 residents and businesses were affected.

The outage included homes in Ranch Camp and Manila Camp, Molokai General Hospital, and the majority of businesses in Kaunakakai. While some had backup generators to keep stock fresh, Friendly Market and others still had spoilages.…

Molokai Holokai Goes Virtual

Like every other sporting event last year, COVID-19 cancelled the annual 2020 Molokai Holokai, a paddling competition of friendly fun for locals as well as acclaimed paddlers and stand up paddlers of all ages. The pandemic also cancelled this summer’s event due to state rules and restrictions, said organizer Clare Albino. But then she decided to try something different – a virtual competition.

“Participants can make their own course in any place, anywhere in the world to make their distances and even break it down in stages and or days,” said Albino, explaining participants upload pictures and times to a virtual leader board, allowing the event to continue during a window that’s open right now.…

Planning for Molokai’s Energy Future

We must go slow, to move fast. This proverb is true for Molokai’s renewable energy needs.

In 2017, Hawaiian Electric Companies (HECO) revealed a statewide plan including Molokai for 100 percent renewable energy by 2020. However, Molokai is not even close to the goal. Molokai has an abundance of rooftop solar, but customer options for roof top solar are limited due to technical limitation with the grid.

Over the last decades, four large-scale renewable energy developers have come and gone without completing projects for various reasons, primarily costs and roadblocks with HECO. Today Molokai remains dependent on expensive and environmentally damaging fossil fuels.…
