As one of many Molokai residents who voted for you to represent us in Congress, I’m sad to hear that you not only voted for the nearly three quarters of a trillion-dollar FY 2022 U.S. military budget but also to increase it by an additional $24 billion. With so many issues facing Molokai and every island, I’m sure your voters could think of far better ways to use those funds. Don’t let the good work you’re doing for Hawaii be overshadowed by indebtedness to weapons manufacturers. You can win elections without them. Please learn from Afghanistan, Iraq, etc., a lesson we should have learned from Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia: no amount of money spent on instruments of death can translate into victory of any sort beyond Wall Street.…

Molokai residents have been complaining for years about the noise caused by military training flights over the island, particularly from Osprey tiltrotor aircraft, which can adjust their rotors to fly like either a helicopter and fixed-wing plane. Now, with more people staying at home during the pandemic, complaints are coming in from around the state, Honolulu Civil Beat reported. The Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation (OLDCC) has opened up a comment questionnaire available for Hawaii residents to air their grievances about military aircraft noise as part of an initiative to address high-disturbance areas. Cadaver Dog Joins Search for Missing Woman

The search continues for Gianina Reid, a 25-year-old woman who disappeared at Pala’au State Park on June 24 – now with police again taking the lead and community volunteer searchers “standing down.” Last Friday, police brought in a cadaver dog from the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency to search the Kalaupapa lookout area. Though the area had been extensively scoured by police and volunteers in the past, this was the first time a trained dog had been brought on the case.  

“There have been eye witness reports and other evidence leading away from this area but recent findings have brought us back here,” said Molokai police detective Kyle “Ikaika” Bishaw-Juario.…

9 New Cases, New County Rules

Molokai had nine new COVID-19 cases last week, according to the Dept. of Health as of Sunday’s data – two each last Wednesday and Thursday, and five new cases last Friday. Statewide, the average daily case count over the last week has been 604. 

A Molokai High School employee was among those to test positive last week. 

“Our school is taking the recommended precautions to ensure the safety of our staff and community, including notifying potential close contacts, closing and disinfecting impacted areas, sharing case information with the DOH and coordinating next steps with the Department’s COVID-19 Core Response Team,” wrote MHS Principal Katina Soares in a letter to the school community.…

Blood Quantum Change ‘Nail in the Coffin’

In response to your excellent reporting “Congressman Kahele Visits Molokai” in the Aug. 25 issue. 

The need for changes of our Abbott and Costello government begins with a restitution that releases the “native Hawaiians” from our longtime policy as wards of this crooked state!

There is no such law, at both levels, which promotes the “rehabilitation” nor advocates “the betterment of the conditions” on behalf of the 1/32 blood quantum Hawaiian.

The introduction in the changing of the blood quantum requirement in order to inherit Hawaiian Homes Land falls in line with Hawaii’s latest scam, Act 80, which reduces the successorship qualification of a lease’s spouse, children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters, etc.,…

Heartfelt Condolences

I am writing this as a means to communicate our heartfelt condolences to Anakala Pilipo, Greg and family on the passing of Dianna.

We came to Molokai for the first time six years ago, fell in love with the island but especially the people. They have brought us back year after year until COVID grounded us. We miss so many friends there and it is especially hard to lose a dear soul so far away.

We always went to Halawa every year and we felt a real bond with the Solatarios — I blew conch with Greg and had some nice moments with the family beyond the usual tourist visit.…
