Molokai High School athletic director and legendary Molokai golfer Lee DeRouin is the October Ace winner for the Hui O Kukui Golf Club. DeRouin shot 39-38 for a gross score of 77. Learning Endeavors is offering its Citizen Science Fall Camp with a virtual session October 15 for kids from all islands ages 7-12. Campers investigate coastal ecosystems, such as wetlands, and engages youth in hands-on science, art projects and games!
The virtual one-day session will take place Oct. 15 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Since this session is 100 percent virtual, it is open to participants from Molokai. Campers will engage in hands-on coastal ecology science and art projects, as well as fun games — and get to make friends with kids all around the islands!
No prior knowledge of citizen science is required to participate.…

Editor’s note: This is the English translation of a Hawaiian language article that was printed in the Sept. 15 issue, written by a Hawaiian immersion student at Molokai High School.
On Sept. 2, 1838 Lydia Liliʻu Loloku Walania Wewehi Kamakaʻeha was born in Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii. The daughter of Analea “Annie” Keohokalole and Caesar Kaluaiku Kamakaʻehukai Kahana Keola Kapaʻakea, and the hānai daughter of Abner Kuhoʻoheiheipahu Paki and Laura Kanaholo Konia. In the year of 1842, when she was 4 years old, she started attending the Royal Elementary School. While attending the Royal Elementary School she learned how to speak fluent English and received musical training. …
A big mahalo to Mokulele Airlines, Richard Schuman, Donna T. and two pilots who went out of their way at 6:30 p.m. Friday evening, Sept. 24, to have a special flight to bring two staff from topside Molokai to Kalaupapa and pick up eight staff going to topside. Weather and other problems delayed or cancelled flights, but the 10 staff were able to be with their ‘ohana for the weekend. Mahalo.

Sept. 11 dawned bright and breezy. At 7 a.m. there was no sign of the “expected coming” except for the tug boat moored in anticipation in the inner harbor. By 8 a.m., there was still no sight on the water of the long awaited one. I thought to myself, what if it has been hijacked and we have another remake of the Mutiny on the Bounty. Finally, at about 9 a.m., Glauco, the Aquaman, motioned to the horizon, far to the right. There it sat like a huge snail on the ocean surface.…

Nearly 50 bikes were given away free to Molokai keiki and more than 200 bikes were repaired during an event brought to Molokai by Krank Cycles Maui last Saturday. The giveaway opened at 9 a.m., and within half an hour, all the bikes donated by the Maui community had been given away, said Krank owner Aaron “Moose” Riechert. Kids arrived at the Molokai Youth Center on foot and left on a bike, while hundreds more bikes were dropped off in a drive-through repair line to become functional once more.
“It’s a little hectic,” said Riechert with tools in hand, fixing a brake line as about half a dozen other mechanics worked their way through long lines of broken bikes.…

On Sept. 19, a resident found and reported a young female seal dead on the south shore of Molokai. The death of the seal, known as L11, marks the sixth seal death on Molokai since the beginning of the year – “an unprecedented number of deaths over a 9-month time period,” according to officials from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). An investigation is underway.
L11 was born last year in Kalaupapa. Hawaii Marine Animal Response Molokai Outreach Coordinator Todd Yamashita said she had been known to haul out on lawns and sandy parking lots on the east side of Molokai, describing her as curious and healthy.…
