New ‘Ukulele Lending Program

Molokai Public Library News Release

Attend a free online event on Oct. 27 at 4 p.m. with ‘ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro in launching a new ‘ukulele lending collection at the Molokai Public Library! 

The event will include live performances with guest musicians Jon Yamasato, Herb Ohta, Jr., and Molokai’s own Jeremiah Kahuakai Kaholoaa.  In addition, Alice Kaahanui, Executive Director of the Molokai Arts Center, will speak about her organization and the programs offered for all ages. 

The ‘ukulele instruments for library check-out are provided and supported by the Music for Life Foundation and Jake Shimabukuro, co-director of the ‘ukulele sponsorship.

Molokai Cases Slow, State Hits 70% Vaccinated

Molokai has had six new COVID cases since the beginning of October, a marked decrease from recent spikes. Between Friday, Oct. 8 and Friday, Oct. 15, there were three individuals on island who tested positive, according to the Dept. of Health as of last Sunday. 

The State of Hawaii has reached a 70 percent vaccination rate, the DOH announced last Friday. The state had previously announced it would drop travel restrictions when it reached this target percentage but the governor has yet to say what will change now that the benchmark has been reached.

In its fourth year, a huge giveaway on Molokai drew hundreds of residents, who took home free clothing, household items, toys and more. Organizer Edee Silva of Oahu said she visited Molokai a few years before the first giveaway and “saw a need.” She had a dream about the giveaway, which sparked her to start accepting donations and start the event four years ago. 

Held at Lanikeha Community Center in Ho’olehua, the event last Thursday, Friday and Saturday was brought to Molokai by Silva and her husband, along with volunteers from the Oahu organization Hui Malama Ohana they founded.…

Wet Season Outlook

With the winter season approaching, weather forecasters have released predictions for how much rain we might see in the coming months. Kevin Kodama, a senior hydrologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in Honolulu, said similar to last year, we may not see significant rain until January. With Molokai coming out of “exceptional drought” conditions over the summer, the island may not fully recover from drought before next dry season. 

Weather experts say this is the second year of La Nina conditions, which are marked by cool sea surface temperatures near the Equator – as distinct from El Nino, which has warm sea surface temperatures.…

Akaʻula School and their swim program has incorporated water polo, considered by some the most ruthless and competitive water related sport ever. Water polo is a full contact sport. Swimming, wrestling, shooting, passing and dribbling are all aspects of this sport. On top of that, players are treading water the entire time to keep afloat for long periods. Don’t Forget to Dial 808

Starting Oct. 24, Molokai residents will need to dial 808 before all numbers, even if you’re calling someone down the road. 

Though it may take some getting used to, to add the “808” before the “553” or the “336,” it’s for a good cause. The 10-digit dialing is part of a national requirement mandated by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that will enable “988” as a new three-digit number to be used nationwide to reach the National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Lifeline, starting July 16, 2022. The new area code requirement applies to both landlines and cell phones. …

MHS Farmers Get Back to Sports

After not being able to compete for more than a year and a half because of COVID-19, Molokai High athletes are excited to be back to practicing for a season of competition. It’s been a bumpy road of hurdles, false starts and frustrations but “things are going in the right direction.”

“I’m very proud of our coaches and our kids doing their best to get out on the fields doing what they need to do,” said MHS Athletic Director Lee DeRouin. “I’m really proud of their attitudes. That’s what sports teaches us… there’s ups and downs and we’re getting through it and moving in the right direction.”…
