Running in the Rain at States

By Rick Schonely, Sports Reporter

The Molokai Cross Country team traveled to Waimea, Hawaii last Saturday for the HHSAA Cross Country State Championships. All five Molokai runners qualified for states this year and were excited to represent their island. Head coaches Kabbie Bicoy-Juario and Mahina Hou Ross had their runners in top shape and ready to run but did not expect the weather to be a major factor this year. Non-stop rain greeted all the runners and made for a unique cross-country race to say the least. Considering the impact of weather conditions on the track, it might be worthwhile to explore options for running track resurfacing near me to ensure optimal conditions for future events.…

Molokai’s Kākāwahie: A Lost Species

Wednesday, December 8th, 2021

By Catherine Cluett Pactol

Blazing orange feathers flash among ‘ohia foliage of Molokai’s lower forests. The bird’s “chip chip chip” call is punctuated with its beak tapping on branches looking for insects, which it also finds deep within liko lehua, or buds.

This is the kākāwahie, or Molokai creeper, an endemic bird found only on Molokai. But it isn’t a sight or sound we can ever experience. The kākāwahie hasn’t been seen since 1963, and it’s about to be declared extinct.

“It has been such a long time since the kākāwahie graced the lowland forests of Molokai that perhaps no one in living memory can say what the bird looked like, or recall its song,” said Sam Gon, a scientist and cultural practitioner at The Nature Conservancy Hawaii.…

More Bovine TB Found on Molokai – UPDATED MEETING INFO

Monday, December 6th, 2021

Bovine tuberculosis has again been detected on Molokai after cases were confirmed earlier this year – this time in pigs in West Molokai, according to the Hawaii Dept. of Agriculture (HDOA) on Sunday, Dec. 5.

In June, Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) was found in a herd of cattle in central Molokai in June. The infected cow was originally from a beef cattle herd in Ho`olehua and was temporarily pastured in Mapulehu on the east end because of the ongoing drought, the HDOA previously stated. The herd was depopulated with federal indemnity, which compensates farmers for this type of loss.

Subsequently, bTB was detected in two additional cattle herds in the Ho’olehua area that were adjacent and in close contact with the first infected herd, according to the HDOA.…

Seumalo Makes MHS Football History

By Rick Schonely, Sports Reporter

Molokai High School graduate Vaai “Uso” Seumalo is on a mission. Last week Seumalo verbally committed to Kansas State University, accepting a football scholarship to the school, where he plans to finish his associate degree in the spring. Since graduating from MHS in 2020, he’s been at Garden City Community College in Kansas. However, the 6-foot-4, 325-pound defensive lineman has been on the radar for Kansas State since he arrived in the state.

He’ll be the first ever NCAA Division I scholarship football player from Molokai High’s football program.

Seumalo is very humbled by his trail-blazing journey and the road is just getting better and better. …

Opinion by Father Pat Killilea, St. Francis Church, Kalaupapa

It came to me last week during our annual Sacred Hearts retreat at St. Anthony Retreat Center in Kalihi Valley. My next article would be entitled “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” after the movie of that title, starring Clint Eastwood. This “inspiration” came to me during one of Father David Reid’s dynamic conferences. Forgive me, David, for being momentarily side-tracked at such a solemn moment! When I shared this “inspiration” with Sister Dolores Pavao ss.cc., my longtime friend and coworker during our time in Massachusetts, she came back with, “Oh, I don’t like that.”…

HI COVID Cases Slow, Regulations Ease

Wednesday, December 1st, 2021

By Catherine Cluett Pactol

With COVID cases on the decline in Hawaii, Gov. David Ige announced changes to rules related to COVID-19 last week. While measures like the Safe Travels Program for entering the state and indoor mask mandates will continue, the governor said emergency orders of pandemic regulations will be transferred to the county level, and limits for social gatherings established in a Nov. 2 state order will end on Dec. 1.

“Hawaii residents have worn their masks and avoided large gatherings, even important family events,” said Ige. “Most of our residents are vaccinated. We worked together to keep our communities as safe as possible during this pandemic.…
